Great Lakes Championships Day I: Log Road MX Maximoff Mighty at Great Lakes Championships By BART NEWMAN BRONSON, MI, JULY 10 M att Maximoff knows how to find money on the race track, so when Log Road MX put up a $2000 Pro purse (with he lp from MCR Suspension , Blo o m Ro o fing , BC Pizza and Championship Powersports), mighty Matt came calling - and it wasn't a wasted trip , as he rode ho me with more than $700 in his pocket after w inning the l og Road C hallenge . More than 565 riders came to compete for factory contingenci es from Yamaha. Hon da and Kawasaki at the third annual Gre at Lakes Championships. When the gate dropped for the Log Road C hallenge, Pr ivateer,n et/ FMF/Deca l Works/ Miche lin /Scott-backed CRF450R r id e r Maximoff was out front and flying. Ho t on his hee ls were eas tside flyer Derek Rose and Codie Bylsma (177) leads Kenny Bass (065) early in the Mini Log Road Challenge. Bass landed the win. Yamaha o f Troy's Nick Adams, and they had no intenti o n o f fo llowi ng M axi m off home . A miscue in the black-dirt section put Adams out fro nt , Rose in second and Maximoff in third. On lap two, Adams came up way short on a huge new do uble an d d ropped back to fourth. Two laps late r, Adams was o ut with bent forks, and Rose was now out fro nt , layin g down ex treme ly fast laps an d looking like he was goi ng to ride away wi t h the w in aboard his High-Tech Horsepower/ MC R Suspension/HjCI jGS Racing-backed Ho n da . Dis ast e r struck Rose on lap five w hen a ho le in th e case grounded his charge to a stop, handing th e lead t o Maximoff. With Rose and Ada ms out, it appe ared to be Ma ximoff 's race . Running second was 1:J. Auten, w ith elder statesman john Grew e third, while Bre nt Miller and Eddie Ray rounded out the top five. Wit h the two-lap board out, a sprint for the finish was all that was left, Maximo ff laid down two perfect laps and t o o k the win going away. The race fo r second tightened up a bunch, and with just half a lap left. Auten le ft the door open fo r the wrong guy, and suddenly Grewe was in the runner-u p spot. Despite pressure fro m Auten, that running order wou ld hold true until the checkered flag. On the podium. Maximoff talked w ith longtime GLC sponsor Bill Vannof Albion Motors. " I felt really great out there today, " Maximoff said , "and the Tech-Care guys had my Privateer.net bike at the top o f its game, grving me the win. The track was great today, and I am happy to see big races like this one on the schedule here at Log Road MX." There was also a Mini Log Road Challenge , which pitted t he fastest 6Scc r id e rs in t he Midwest against one another (or a shot at the $500 put up by the good folks at BC Pizza . Codie Bylsma rocketed off the line and pulled the pack of 60 riders through tum one. Kawas aki rider Mat Herringt on qui ckly passed Haskell and sta rted to build a commanding lead on the res t of the class. By t he e n d o f t he ra ce, th e s peedy Herrington had a lead of seve ral minute s over sec ond -placed rider Matt Klein. Th e battl e fo r third fea tured riders Travis Taba lske an d Kevin Liddicoat. These two racers sta yed ne ck and nec k until th e end of the race ; Tab alske w ould finish just 22 seconds ahe ad of Lidd icoat.
