Here Tim Taber airs out his KTM on his way to fifth overall. said . "I was just using to much energy. I just slowed up en ough so that he could pass ." Knowing t hat the pace that he an d Jar rett were setting out front woul d wear t hem out far too q u ic kly, Kanney used his turn in the lead po sition to slow their pace down from 24-minute lap averages to just over 25 minutes a lap. "The off-camber single-track started to get rutted out," Kanney said, "and that made it impossible to pass with out risking going off the trai l and getting stuck in the bottom of some ravine, so I just slowed it down. O nce we got back to the grass tracks and two track, it was back to racing ." The final lap of t he ra ce saw the most lead changes all day, with Jarrett and Kanney swapping the lead back and forth two times before Kanney was able to slip away. " It just came down to him making After running in second for part of the first lap, Shane Watts succumbed to a series of crashes. The lastone comingon a rocky section of trailthat saw the Australian crash hard on an off-camber sidehil!. The violent third gear get-offwas enough for the likable Australian to call it quits for the day. the last mistake," Kanney said. "I knew I had a couple of good passing lines if I needed them, but as it turned out, he blew off the trail in one of the last rocky sections, and I was able to squeeze by." While Kanney and Jarrett battled away for the lead, Ca lkins salvaged a third-place finish, just over three minutes back , after he had lgnition-related problems. "I had a pretty good start," Calkins said. "Something like fifth or sixth off the line. By the second mile I was in second , and then I started stalling my bike . The first couple of miles were made up of real technical single-track, and the bike must have started to overheat and the ignition spark started to get weak. The first time it happened , I had a hill to roll down and was able to bump-start it right away. Then it fiamed out again. This time I was at the bottom of a ravine and wasn 't as lucky [to stall on a hill], and I had to have help push starting it. By the time we got it going , I was do wn a good four of five minutes so , I just put my head down and started to ride hard. I was surprised when I started mov ing my way back up as fast as I did, but Jimmy [jarrett] and Nate [Kanney] were just too much to catch." After his win, Kanney now sits in second place in the points standings. Since Jarrett finished second, he now holds down the lead position, some 13 eN points ahead of Kanney.
