Scott Davis was also o n t he pace most o f th e time , finish ing t hird in moto o ne , but he fe ll out of co nte ntion in mo to two. Blair had the newly designed , expanded, very te ch nica l t rac k w ired; he was th e onl y r ider able to trip le out of the t o ugh rh yt hm sectio n right in fro nt of the stands. He see med to gain a fe w bikel e ngth s every lap in th at section alone . For all that hard work, Blair got to go to the back for the start of the main event. Northrop was right in fro nt of him, and when the green nag new, those tw o moved to ward the front of the pack w ith reckless aba ndon . As a resu lt of his bad luck duri ng the qualifiers, Scott Davis got a be tt e r starti ng pos ltlon, and he led fo r several laps early in the race . N ort hro p was the first of the two favo rite s to d rop anchor right be hind him, w ith Blair showi ng up mo me nts late r. Davis was rid ing the w he e ls off his RM. but N o rt hro p and Blair w ere setting the pace. Northrop got around first, taking over the lead , while it too k Blair a little longer to make a pass stick. That ended up being the difference in the race: W hile Bla ir wa s t r yin g t o move into sec on d place . No rth ro p was building a lead . By the time Blair moved into the ru nner-up spot , it was too late to do anything abo ut Northrop. : Wh ile second wasn't exactly what Blair was loo king for in San Jose , he st ill had to leav e fee ling pretty good.
