Breckon returning the favor a lap late r.
Breckon was then able to open a gap,
which Hirko eventually closed up agaln.
Meanwhile, Silva was creeping up on the
lead pair. As they got into lapped traffic
toward the end of the race, Silva pounced
on Hirko to take second, and Breckon
built a lead that carried him to the checkered flag first.
F-500 featu red a battle of the 19s, as
Satu rday winner Karsten IIIg ( 19X)
opened up a lead over Ch ristopher
Spargo ( 19), both riding Yamaha twostroke twins. Class ch ampion Dave
Crussell soon bro ught his Kawasaki H I up
and got past Spargo. The latter then got
back into second spot, and their battle
pushed the m up to IlIg as the race wore
on. On the last lap, Spargo jumped out
into the lead and was followed across the
line by Ilig and then Crussell.
On the track at the same time were the
Sportsm an 5005, and, in similar fashion,
BSA rider s Don Jagger and David
Rutherford caught up with leader Todd
Narduzzi (Honda). This time, however, the
leader didn't relinquish the lead, and Jagger
ended up second and Rutherford third.
Springsteen and Nixon we re back for
Sunday's F-7S0 action, and for the first
time Tim Joyce was part of the mix, too.
Mounted on another Hourglass Harley,
Joyce went back and forth for the lead
with Springe r, wh ile Nixon held dow n a
solid th ird. Altho ugh Springste en had
opened a fair-sized gap at one point late in
the race, he took o nlya narrow win at the
checkered flag.
When the Formula Vintage race came
aro und, Springstee n deci ded to make
things interesting and started at the rear
of the second wave , beh ind all the SOS
Two -Strokes . By the first tum , he had
passed all the SOS bikes, and before two
laps were do ne, he was first overall on
the tra ck, ahead of the first -wave Formula
Vintage field and still charging. Spargo
und id a pass that Carter had made on him
to ta ke second in F-Vintage, while
Smallwood collected his second SOS
Two-Stroke w in of the weekend.
In other mod ern -bike action , BOT F-I
wa s something of a replay of Saturday 's
race, as Hatten grabbed the holeshot but
couldn't hold off Stranahan. But as
Stranahan pulled away, there was an
exce llent battle over second place. Both
David Podolsky and Brenne r got around
Hatten, on ly to have the Ducati rider first
get back around Bre nne r and then
Podolsky to reclaim his runner-up position by race's end . Hatten also earned
third, behind Paul Vitale and Podolsky, for
th e day in Sound of Thunder and too k the
win on his BBM , ahead of Kevin Keys, in
Super Mono 2.
The Super Mono race was a thriller, as
the Honda-mounted Keys and AI Charles,
on his Ducati Supermono went back and
forth for the lead in the early laps before
Charles managed to get in front and continue to narrowly hold off Keys. But while
all eyes were focused on that battle , the
trio of Bob Robbins, Podolsky and Steve
Heilman was closing in. On the last lap,
Podolsky and his Tigcraft vaulted into the
lead, chased across the line by Charles,
Keys, Heilman and the n Robbins.
