"Bimbo" Pomeroy didn't lead the start of
either moto in the + 50 Expert class, but
he wasted little time taking the lead,
which he wou ld hold to the finish . jimmy
jerles trailed Pomeroy at the checkered
flag in both motos as he carded 2-2 scores
for second overall.
A large number of + 40 Intermediates
necessitated the dividing of the class into
two groups. Ted Keating and Gene
Wolstenholm split moto wins in group
one , with Keating taking the overall with a
1-2 tally. james Work piloted his Suzuki to
a 3-1 score , earn ing top honors in group
two . Robert Hodges earned runner-up
with 2-3 finishes.
Work capped his weekend with the
overall in the Sportsman 2S0cc
Intermediate class. The Ohio resident
topped the large field with a 1-2 tally. Ted
Keating followed Work both motos, fin ishing with 2-3 scores for second overall.
joel Sakamoto left Mid-Ohio with victories in Classic 125cc Intermediate and
Sportsman Open Twin Intermediate. The
California-based racer apparently felt right
at home in the mud, as he won all four
motos he entered during the event. eN

he Mid -Oh io motocross
track began the race weekend as a freshly mowed 30acre field with few elevation
changes or threatening
obstacles. Many participants contributed
t he ir time and e nergy, designing and
preparing the track for the largest attended AHRMA motocross event of
the year. The track consisted of approxi mately I 1/2 miles of twisting, grass-covered sod with a coup le of small rises that
barely propelled riders off the ground
and an innocent little water crossing. The
stage w as set for a great day of
racing...and then the rain came!
The morning practice sessions turned
the track into a slick and slimy mess. The
little, inconspicuous stream became MidOhio's version of the infamous
Blackwater river crossing, as fans lined
the fence, chanting and cheering as they
eagerly awaited the next rider 's attempt
to cross the innocent-appearing creek.
Many crossed successfully, and many others learned that a little water can cause a
lot of havoc in the ignition system of an
old motorcycle. The track was often lit-
T
tered with riders kicking or pushing to
restart a stalled bike. Even some of
AHRMA:s most notable racers, such as
jeff Smith and David Boydstun, we re bitten by the water gremlin at some point
during the day.
The event kicked off when the
Sportsman 250 Experts jetted off the
starting line, with Eric Muffley leading the
pack on his Kawasaki. Wesley Miller Tim
,
Nash, Rhett Smith and Timothy Weaver
were close behind the leader when
Weaver clicked his Bultaco into overdrive
and rocketed into second place by the
completion of lap one . Weaver remained
within two seconds of Muffley throughout
the moto but could never attempt a pass
before the two crossed the finish line.
The second moto was clearly the Weaver
show, as he took the moto win and the
overall. Muffley was unable to repeat his
first-moto performance, and he settled
for sixth place in the second rou nd for
fourth overall.
Weaver continued his winning ways
with a dom inating performance in the
Open Age Expert class. He piloted his
trusty Bultaco to 1- J moto finishes over
Michael Arendasky's 2-2 tally
.

Tim Montgomery, jeffrey Anthony and
Thomas O'Shesky. Penton-mounted
Anthony charged from fourth to first
place on the first lap, towing Maicomounted O 'Shesky with him as they
paced the field. During the third lap,
O 'Shesky made an inside move on the
back side of the track to take over the top
position, which he held to the checkered
flag. Anthony nailed the moto-rwo
holeshot , leading Bonham, Butcher and
first -mote
winner
O 'Shesky, but
O 'Shesky once again set his sights on the
leaders , eventually working his way to the
top position by the end of the race to
complete his two-moto sweep.
