OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, JUNE26 a ~ i:5 ~ ~ 1Il ~ 0. Randy "The Racket" DiFrancesca and Andy Northrup bo"le in Handicap action at Costa Mesa Speedway. Fan Appreciation Night Costa Mesa Speedway Flyin' Mike and The Rocket Take Offl By ELAINE JONES COSTA MESA, CA, JUNE26 t was Fan Night at Mesa and "Flyin' and ISpeedway, Apprec iationMike" FariaCosta Randy "The Rocket " DiFrancesco let them know just how much they are appreciated by winning the Scratch and Handicaps mains, re spectively, in specta cular style! The first Scrat ch semi had C harlie "T he Edge " Ve negas on th e pole, w ith Bo bby "Boogaloo" Schwartz in two, Denny Scopellite in three and Faria in four. Faria wasted no time showing who was going to be in charge, as he cut the best gate and wen t wire to wire in the quick four-Iapper. Venegas came home secon d and was also on his way to the main eve nt. Schwartz and Sco pe llite headed to t he lastchance qualifier . Th e se cond semi had Ch r is "T he Kid" Manche ster on the po le, with Shawn "Mad Dog" McConnell in two. O n the outside were Bob by "Cowboy " Krips and the curre nt Natio nal champ, Scotty "The Do minat or" Brant. To show the fo lks why he wears the number one on his back, Brant exploded off the line and put in a faultless ride to ensure himself a spot in the main. Mancheste r wou ld join him, w hile Krips and McConnell headed for the LCQ , Scopellite drew the pole as they lined up for the LCQ. McConnell was in two, with Krips and Schwartz in three and four. The gate was close , as both McConnell and Schwartz went out hard . As they came out of two , McConnell was in the lead. and he put in a defensive ride to keep Schwartz from getting by. McConnell would be the last rider in the Scratch main. For t he Scratch main, the richest race of 78 the night , Manchester d rew t he po le , with Faria in two, McCon nell in three , and Brant and Faria on t he outsi de : a five-rider go, and fo ur o f t hem we re Natio nal Champions. When the tapes came up, Venegas went o ut o n top. but it was sh ort -live d , as he had mechanical pro blems before he got t hro ugh two. Faria was right there to take advantage of the situat ion. Manchester was riding do uble with him, and Brant was more than knocking on the door as he loo ked fo r a way aro und. T hese guys do n't make mista kes , and th ey would finish in that order. The lineup for the Handicap main had Buck Blair on the 20-yard line, with DiFrancesco and Shaun Harrnatluk o n the 30. McConnell, Andy "The Enforcer " Northru p and Venegas shared the 40, Faria and Manchester we re on the SO. Blair, o n a 25-year-old Godden, led the field, and he did it on pure riding ability DiFrancesco . was pounding on him in every turn, but the young Coloradan wasn't intimidated , and he did a heck of a job holding him off, It came down to a drag race for the checkered flag, and the win went to DiFrancesco by an eyelash. JOHNSON M iSSY Clark came fro m behind to win the overall in the Women's class at the eighth and final round of the Oklahoma State Championship Series , he ld at Motorcycle Raceway in O klahom a City. Suzuki jockey Chris Blewett took the first mota. Blewett got the holeshot and led the rest of the women to the finish line, while Clark followed in second on her Kawasaki and Che lsea Snow took third on he r Suzuki. Moto two saw a more detennined Clark get the holeshot, but Blewett took the lead again before the end of lap two . After battling back and forth for a lap, Clark backed off until the white-flag lap, when she twisted her throttle and flew around Blewett to take the win as the checkers came out. Snow again crossed the finish line in third. The pod ium turned green . as the top three finishers of the Mini Beginner class were all r iding Kaw asakis. Kyle Yar be r ry too k t he hol eshot in mo te o ne and tu rned it into a victory, while Yamaha rider Co rey Ashley put his Yamaha int o second and Jar e d Hewit t followed in third. Ashley had problems in moto two afte r tak ing the lead fro m Alex Stone as the y came out of the first turn; as he was pulling away, he encountered bike tr ouble and scored a DNE Yarberry capital ized o n Ashley 's misfort une and wo n the mota, giving him the overall. Hewitt managed to finish second , and Stone followed in third. There was no contes t in the 250cc Novice class. Justin Berry, on his Baker Boys Yamaha, took the holeshot and the win in both motos . Two Hondas followe d Berry to the finish line, piloted by Brock Halverson and Duane Goodwin, in both motos. As you may have surmised, the overalls went 10 Berry, Halverson and Goodwin. The 125cc Pro class was exciting because Go mez Racing's Jo hn ny Marley w as back in act io n afte r being do wn all year w it h two b ro ke n legs . There was no speed lost, as Marley ra iled t he t rack on his Honda and fended off any attempts at passing by Yamaha rider Robbie Smith . Still looking like a cripp le whe n he's off the bike. Marley showed no such weakness w h ile r ac ing. Sm it h settled fo r second , while Mark Blackwell had to pass Jerad De Armon in both motos for third. Congrat ulations to all the participants of the 2004 Ok lahoma State Cha mpio nship Series. Stay safe until next year. Justin Bo gle (Kaw); 2. Gr e go ry Ge hre r (Kaw) ; 3 .
