Steve McQueen Memorial Vintage Motocross Eugene Motocross Park PHOTOS BY C LAYL1GtfT Nyblod Nabs Two! By CLAY LIGHT EUGENE, OR, JUNE 27 v: ntage motocross pioneer Dallas Nyblod was on top of his game at the 19th annual Steve McQueen Memorial Vintage Motocross. held at Eugene Motocross Park. Nyblod and Californian Tom McKinney waged a battle in the Over 40 Expert class, which Nyblod won . Nyblod also dominated the 250cc Expert class. Ridinghis 1974 Vamaha VZ250, Nyblod was in a class of his own in the combined 250cc Expert/Intermediate class. Nyblod jumped out in front in both rnotos and was never seriously challenged. McKinney. who was also piloting a VZ of the same year, ran close to Nyblod in the early stages of both motes, although Nyblod clicked off a successive stri ng o f flawless laps to increase his lead with eac h circuit of the 2-mile course . N y bl od and McKinney placed one-two in moto two as well to snare the top positions overall. Oregon's Joe Casey finished third in mota two, but a motoone fifth-place finish drop pe d him to fourth overall , as Bentley (3-4) placed third overall. Husqvarna rider Richard Dyer and O ssa Phantom-mounted Scott Stanley split mota w ins in the competitive 250cc lnterrnediate class, but it was Dyer garnering the overall win with his 1-3 finishes. Stanley didn't fare too well in the opening mota, placing fifth, but he came back strong in mota two and trailed Dyer, Tim Bentley (4-2) and Marty Cattaneo (2-4) overall. Washington's Andrew McKeag rounded out the top fIVe overall aboard his Husqvama. Oregon's Jim Row, the reigning AHRMA Open Age National Champ ion, didn't have his nonnal dominating day, although the rider fro m Portland did capture a win in the O pe n Expert class. Riding a 1973 CZ400, Row used 2- 3 into third place, just ahead of Bryan Yarrow, who was making his return to st at e side speedway a fter o pen ing t he season in the Br itish Premie r League. By t he time Brant secured the second-ru nning spot, Manchester was gone and on his way to the checkered flag. He dde n he ld on to third , and Yarrow, who looked sharp in his return. rounded out the field in fo urt h. The Handicap main was the polar opposite of the Scratch main : The win came down to the final st ra ig ht a w ay. T.J. Fowler was rew arded for last week's Handicap main-event win w ith an addi tiona l IO-yard hand icap , starting the race from the 20-yard line. Chad Felicio was the lone rider on the 40-yard line, while the 50 was jammed full, with Manchester, Bart Bast , He dde n and Brant all bun ched up next to the turn-four containment fence . Brant got the best start, but it was apparently too good, and a re start was ordered, with Brant moved back to the 60. The restart began witho ut a hitch , and in the firs t four laps of the race, the running 76 finishes to take top honors in the class. Hondamounted Aaron Hohman thumped to a win in the first mota, but neither he nor McKinney, who won mota two, finished well in his other mota. McKinney (6- 1) finished second overall, followed by CZ rider Chris Clark. Clark , one of the premier Expert riders in the Northwest , had a day of fr us t ra t io n ; alth ough th ings went awry in many of his motes. he did place second in the final 500cc Expe rt mota and salvaged some valuable points in his Regional title quest, finishing third overall, ahead of Hohman (1-6) and Chris Wilkes (4-4). Wilkes turned some heads in the O pe n Age Expert class by not only winn ing both rnotos b ut be a t ing one of the top r iders in the coun try, Row. Wilkes' finest moment came late in moto two: Row led from t he d rop o f the gate and came one turn away from the overall win . Wilke s' last-d itch attem pt to pass Row worked to perfection when the Ho nda rider put a front w heel under Row with the checkered flag in Sight. Bremen Race Park Turner Turns It On at Bremen Moto-Madness By F.B. ATKINSON BREMEN, GA, JUNE 26 A wet week didn't ke e p some 200 r iders /""'\tra m making the trip o ut to Bremen. The track crew didn't let them down, the program came off without a hitch, and good tract io n was had by all. The gate's full, so let's get to the stands . The 50cc (4 -6) was a " do uble feature ." Cobra pilot Payton Morgan was in control this even ing, scoring two mota wi ns . Fast KTM r ider Bailey Croom was the spoi ler of th e Cobra dom ination w ith second overall , and another Cobra man, Trent Bilodeau, was the third pod ium occupant on th is night. The second part of the program was a parents race. The parents are allowed on the track to help the smaller racers if they fall or stall. The 40t h Anniversary se co nd gate drop was to see w ho was the faste st par e nt · on foo t. The crowd went crazy! Bailey Croom's dad was the quickest , and only one dad did a face-plant. The 50cc (l -B) contest was a KTM sweep. Jaco b Seagrav es got the job done by w inning both motos. Caleb Sullivan was a solid second overall with a great effort. Cory Massey had a slip in the second mota but held on for the th ird podium position . The Vouth and 125cc C co ntests fe atured the best racing of the night. Tyler Jugel was the w inner in the Youth d ivis ion , but t he competit io n d idn't ma ke it easy. Aust in Drummond , on his Freewheeling/LSD-tuned Honda. won one of the motos and was in the lead a couple of times in the other.
