The week- long event, now in its firth year, is combined with the U.S. Women's O pe n trial and is designed to give mo torcycle-ridi ng families four days of "summe r camp" activities, including hay rides , swimming at Bilbao Falls. nature rides, triaJs-riding instruction, fireworks, an d a field tri p to Chattanooga's Tennessee Aquarium before wrapping up with the three day Youth Nationa l Championshi p even t, which is considered the "Loretta Lynn's of the trials world." Even a week full of off-and-on rain couldn't dampen the spirits of those who attended the fun-filled extravaganza. Massachusetts' Lo uise Fo rsley rode her Sherco to a pair of firsts and a third to claim the O pe n-division National title, and th e overall National tit le, ahead of Daniel Allen, also o f Massachusetts , and Kentucky's Matt Koenig. Forsley's ace in the hole was her familiaritywith slippery terrain and her minder, who was none other than Nationa l veteran Ray Peters. "Ray was a tremendous help: said Forsley. "He helped me find lines that I wo uldn't have found, and he was a great motiva tor. It feels really good to win, but I was a little surp rised to do so well in the overall. I just put my head to it and rode as good as I knew I could." Forsley was recently selected to represent the United States on the women's team that will compete in Spain during the Trial des Natio ns. While Forsley had a somewhat easy time in the Op e n class, the 10-year-old division was tight. Daniel Leavitt , son of three -time National champ Lane Leavitt, won the title by claiming the final day on a t ie breaker over Arizona's Bryan Roper. Going into the final day of competition, four riders in the 10-year-old class had a legitimate shot at the title. On day one, Roper won, with Leavitt second, Georgia's Bo Ibse n third. and Colorado's Marcus Banister fourth. O n day two, Ibsen wo n, with Leavitt second, Banister third and Roper fourth . O n the final day, Leavitt and Roper each finished w ith only one point lost . Both riders poste d an identical 23 cleans, but Leavitt took the win by virtue of having more ones, which also gave him the overall title for the dass. Ibsen was third on the day, with three points and third overall in the series. Banister claimed fourth on the day and fourth overall. Canadian Will Abe ll ro de t o a 1-2-1 weekend, besting Alex Bedley's 2-1·2 showing to claim the 13-year-old title. Local boy De an Be chard swept the 7-year-old d ivision w ith three straight wi ns . Texan Zeke Mizell was second. and Rebecca Leavitt was third . Fo rsley ret urned to win the Women's Open event , while Caroli ne Altma n won t he Wome n's two line , over je ssica Smith and Christina Bechard . Joshua Vermillion County Fairgrounds Toungett on Target at Danville Fair By DAVE HOENIG DANVIW, IL, JUNE 23 ob Sargent's On Track Promotions launched the 2004 Fair circuit wit h a $30 00 sho rt track on the Vermi llion County Fairgrounds' high-banked quarter-mile. Entries for the Wednesday night program were bolstered by a large contingent from Australia. The Aussies made the long journey to participate in t he following week's AHA Amateur Grand Nationals. They made the best use of a couple of AMA District 17 races to get acclimated the American flat-track scene. Taking w ins back Down Unde r were Todd Perlowski (in th e 65cc class) , Rhett Standen (in the 85cc class), Tom Armstrong (in the 86-2 00cc class), and David Armstrong (in the 4S0cc class). B Aussie David Armstrong took the checkers in the 4S0cc class in Danville, Illinois. 74 AUGUST 4,2004 • CYCLE N EWS Andrew Hughes got th e holeshot in the 50cc Shaft main, but Blake Krausharr quickly ove rcame a poor start to run dow n the leade r. Hughes, MollyTerry and Chase Wright then had a great race for second. Wright came out on top . over Terry and Hughes. Terry returned in the SOcc Chain class and had a race -long battle with Springfield Derosear. Terry was able to take the lead with just two laps left and hold on for the win. The lead duo lapped the entire field. The 8Scc and 6Scc classes ran together. with the Australians sweeping. Stande n ran away on his 85cc Honda. while Perlowski tried to keep up on his 65cc KTM. Josh Blaze k and Derosear had a great race for second in the 6Scc class. Derosear was ahead on the last lap. Mark Kirkman and David Armstrong rocketed out front in the iSOcc main. As the two battled away , they pulled well ahead of fellow Aussies Matthew Pasin and Ja m ie Muirhead . David grabbed the lead on lap seven and led the Aussie sweep. David came right back in the Open main, giving chase to Nick Williams, who had jumped out fron t on his Rota x. Shane Vance was working his way forwar d, and he set Armstrong back on lap three. Vance closed on Williams, and both left David to fend off Kirkman. Dean Je t t got the holes hot , over Huey Rob inson , in the Veteran Over 30 ma in . Robinson made short work of [e rt, and W illiam Rook moved into third . The SOScc Pro race was the last one before the crowd ret ur ned t o t he fair's midway.
