J usti n Th ur ma n topped the Schoolboy and 125cc Novice A classes a t the first round of the first -ever Arkansas State Championship Series a t Donaldson MX Park. Shuffield. T hurman crossed the checkers first , a hea d o f R. D. , on t h e KX 2 s 0 F. H u m bard crossed the line third , ahead of Shuffield. The second mot o w as nearly a car bon co py of the first , as Th urman rocketed ou t of the gate to lead the pack out onto the now dry and dusty track. Thu rman immed iately began to try to gap the field. but R.D. began to push , staying wit h T hurman and watching his lines. As the two front-runne rs t urned up t he pace, they stead ily p ulled away from H um b a r d a nd Shu ffie ld. As they crossed the fin is h line , Thurman's gap back to R.D. was much smaller than it had been in moto one . Humbard and Shuffield again rounded o ut the podium. In other raci ng action, Guy Cooper also sho wed up to make an att em pt at taking hom e some cash , and t ak e home money he did : Cooper not only went I -I in the O ver 30 Expert class, but he also bested local Pro Blake Keet on in t he 2s0cc Pro class. Cooper d id all this aboar d a n electric-start KT M wit h headligh t , ta illight and kickst and. Cooper also won the Pit Bike race held during intermission . Garrett Comer fought off the competition to take the overall w in in the 6scc (9-1 I) class, ahead of such not ables as Cody Davison. Corby Shumate and Drake McGuire . Portland Tra il Riders MX Ozanich, Korte Court Victory at Portland MX By BART NEWMAN PORTLAND, MI, JUNE 13 he rain stayed home , an d the r ide rs rejoiced, as more than 330 of them made their way to Portland MX for day two of a great weekend of Dist rict 14 motoing. Dave Korte was bo th fast and consistent. nailing dow n a win during the morning's Over 30 showdown, w hile Nick O zanich was the king of the afternoon . T 60 grabbing the win in 250cc C act ion . In mota one of the Over 30 class, "Fast Eddie " Hieft je rode away w ith a w in. Hieftje always gets a good start. and he was up front as the pack rou nded turn one. The n he went to work putting some time on the field. Hieft je is a local guy w ho has put in a ton of laps around the Po r t lan d Trail Riders facili ty . Korte took third in moto one, riding well an d ho lding o ff a charge fro m De w itt Powerspo rts rider jim Price , w ho crossed the line in fou rth . Bob Smutz came ho me fifth . Moto two got under way without mo te -one winner Hieft ]e , w ho was unable to make the starti ng line due to a bad throttle cable o n his scooter, w hich was bad luck for him but good luck for Korte. Schra uban got a better start this time around, and he and Korte went to work o n getting the day' s overall. Korte go t the nod in the end, riding his KTM to victo ry. Schrau ban was sec o nd in the seco nd go -around as well, which lo c ke d up second o ve ral l. Pr ice d id him se lf on e be tter in mo ta two. w hich was good fo r third overal l. Ryan Dexte r was second after a mota-long batt le with Bra ndt Becker, who took third . Ben Bixby d idn't get the start he wan ted and came across t he line in fourt h. a nd Eric Pung finished fifth. In the secon d st a nz a . t he table s we re turned. Andy Warner so ldie red hom e w ith the win. but a first-m oto 12th ke pt him outsi de the top five overal l. Bixby got a be tter sta rt t his ti me a ro un d and he ld on t o se co nd , whic h mat ched his overall finish for the day as wel l. Becker was the most consistent of the bunch , going 3·3 for third overall. Ozanich rebounded from a horrible start and clawed his way up to fourth at the end ofthe me te , wh ich gave him a total o f five points and t he d ay ' s 2s 0cc C overal l.
