The front ro w wa s full of ra ce rs hungry for the first-ever National 2S0cc-c1ass featu re w in. At the start, Dave Arnold nabbe d th e ho le sho t aboard his CR F250 , a he ad o f Y amaha ride r Dominic Beaulac and KTM 's Guy Gir o ux. As Arno ld started to br e a k aw ay, Giroux closed in on Beaulac to challe nge for second. By halfway, Arnold had checked out on the rest of th e field . In t he inte nse battle for se co nd , Be a ula c w e nt down in th e infie ld chicane , handing the pos ition over to Giroux. In t he closing lap s, Inglis Cycle Ce ntre Honda 's Doug Beatt ie and Beaulac were able to come back from t heir ear ly problems and close in on Giro ux, All three fought hard for the final tw o pod ium spots, exchanging positions re peatedly until the checkers new. Arno ld cruised to th e win, and Beau lac fended off Giroux for second. Beattie just didn't have e nough to take the final S4 podiu m posit ion and finished in fourth . As the most anticipated race of the night. the Pre mie re O pen featu re , lined up. Arno ld's domi nance th roughout the eve ning suggest ed that he may become the first dual-class winner of th e 2004 se aso n. O ff the line , Arn old and Be au lac wer e side by side e nte ring co rne r num be r one , but by try ing to outb rake ea ch oth er, they en ded up going w ide th rough th e apex, allow ing the CRF450-moutned Beatt ie to sneak un derne ath a nd int o first . Howev e r, Arno ld re covered quickly and took ove r th e po sit ion . Be aula c move d int o t htrd . be hind Beattie. Just as in the Pro/Am 2S0c c feat ure , Arnold pulled out a commanding le ad , ove r Beatt ie and Beaulac, who were loc ked in a fight fo r se cond . Be aulac's d irt-track e xpe rie nce proved beneficial, as he was able to gain second p lace , overtaking Be att ie he ad ing int o t he ta ble to p jump. O nce past Beatt ie , Beaulac set his sights on catch ing the ultrafast Arnold. As Beaulac closed in on Arnold, they both sta rted t o en co unte r la pp e d tra ffic. Arn o ld w as momentarily he ld up by backmarkers; Be aulac capita lized , closing in. But it st ill woul dn't be enough: Arnold took the checke rs and the first Pre miere O pe n National event w in. His co nsiste nt riding put him 13 po ints ahea d of Jim Ri hard s at the finish. c The tightest batt le of th e day was in th e Advanced class, between Chris Cullins and 12year-old Gas Gas 125-mounted Andre w Older. The only rider to clean sectio ns two and five on the first loop, Oldar jumped off to a quick fourpoint lead ove r C ullins and Kent Graham . On th e seco nd loop , O ldar dr opped three po ints on the t hird section, while Cu llins cleane d it, putting the riders only a point apart going into the final loo p. Cullins got a t hree of his own on the first sec tion of the third loo p, while O ldar took only a Sing dab. The tw o riders matched le sco res the rest of the wa y, with O ldar taking the w in by t hree , while Graha m faded to IB po ints, five beh ind Cullins. Mast e r rid e r Ringo Scharnwebe r had four cleans to beat IIl-yearold RyanSandoval's two cleans, with both riders seven back of Tad Bennett. District 16 Ha re Scram b les Poi nts Series Round 2: Big Bear Trax Keen Eyes Big Bear Trax Prize By GREG PETERS LONG LAKE, WI, JUNE 12 M o re th an 109 e ntrants attende d th e second round of the District 16 Hare Scrambles Points Series at the Big Bear Trax. This was an impre ssive turnout for the club's first year. The 3-mile course had bo th techn ical woods , wh ich favored e ndu ro ride rs, and op en t rail, which favored motocross riders. In t he morning, KTM rider Cody St e uck 40t h Anniversary domin at ed th e 50cc class. Steuck got a good st art, che cke d ou t, and ra n a nearly perfect race . Be njam in Rowe finished second, ahead of KTM ride r Blake Boce k, On e of the tightest classes of the day was the ared Hutt erer won by just eight B5cc division.
