Cooper (14X) in the Tekn ic Pro/Am 2S0cc fea ture ot the history-making ro und two of the Diablo Su perMoto Championship Provincial Series . Canadian supennoto race . This event is also the first -ever motorcycle event in the w orld to utilize high-definition technology. making round two of the 2004 series truly one to remember. When the gates opened for Sunday 's race, riders and fans rolled in, ready to enjoy the festivities and lots of great racing. Overcast s kies kept tra ck temperat ures down, and traction became a concern (or some . After the event opened w ith a speech fro m the Mayor of Picton and the singing of the Canadian and American nat io nal anthems by Debra Bayber, the Teknic Pro/Am 250cc final was th e first of t he day. IngliS Cycle Centre Honda's Doug Beattie continued to show great speed and control as he took the holeshot , ahead of Machine Racing Hond a's Dave Arnold , and never loo ked back . Motovan/KTM's Allan jaggard held off speedy Ho nda rider Mike Saarela for th ird as they all entered the dirt. By midrace, Beattie and Arnold had broken away (rom the rest as they co ntinued their battle for the lead . Beattie lost some time when he crossed up in a rut , allowing Arnold to close in, but in the end it wasn't enough, as Beatt ie took his first win of 2004, with Arnold in second and jaggard in third. Eyes lit up as all the Pros o f Canadia n supermoto racing rolled up to staging for the Pre mie r O pe n feature . On the start, Arnold took the holeshot, followed closely by Hondamounted Bill Baker and Yamaha rider Brent Strong. Troubles plagued the round-one winner, Umbrella Girls Yamaha rider Mark Burkhart, as he couldn 't find cons istency throughout the day ; he would go on to finish back in ninth . Up (rant, Arnold showed why he ho lds the number-one plate , as his lead continued to grow throughout the race. Arnold he ld off a late charge fro m Beattie to take the win, followed by Beattie in second and KTM rider Ken Bland in third . The Picton stop has come to be a favorite on the Provincial Series circuit, so it w as only fitting that such histo ry was made here. The efforts of all the people who helped mak e the Ride To Remember possible are greatly appreciated. Superbikers2 Supermoto Sprint Series Round 3: Briggs ond Stratton MOlorplex a t Road America Harlow Edges Out Vestal By MARK WOLBRINK ELKHART LAKE, WI, JUNE 6 D iders (ro m around the worl d were dodging "-spe ctato rs instead of rain puddles on their way to the Motorplex for the third rou nd of the 5uperbikers2 Supermoto Sprint Se ries . The great weather allowed the permanent dirt sec tio n to be ru n for the entire weekend. In addition to the challenge the dirt posed for the racers, it also kept the support vendors busy. Robert Miller and the Service Pavilion staff had their hands full repairing Arai helmets that had suffered damage from dirt-related mishaps . Walt Schae fer Ircm Miche lin tried to prevent such mishaps by way of proper tire selection. With his big blue -and-yellow box tr uck parked 76 within the supermoto pit area, Schaefer really enjoys be ing part of supermoto events. "I was racing back in the early '7 0s, when a lot or peo ple in the upper Midwest were racing big dirt bikes on road-race tracks." Schaefer said. " It's nothing new. We are just using 17inch wheels now!" The only class that doesn't run the 17-inch wheels is the Spo rt class, which requires that the stock wheels be used . In no way does this limit the competition, and Sunday 's races proved it. Terry Vestal was look ing to continue his wi nning ways from the first two rounds . Aft e r swapping the lead with N ick Flunker countless times in the first couple of laps of the heat race, Vestal motored on to take the win JUL 14, 2004 • CYCLE N EW S Y and th e pole . Mike Harlow and Michae l Shilts also had good races and filled in the re maining two spots on the fro nt row of the main. Braking deep into tum one, Vestal ducked in fro nt of Shilts and Harlow on the first lap of the Sport main. Arter a couple of laps. Vestal had built a tomfortable lead , ahead of Shilts and Harlow, who were racing for second. As Vestal continued out fro nt, these two put on a seminar on what makes supermoto so great . Shilts comes (rom a dtrt -teack background , and everyone watching the race could tell. He would enter the dirt with Harlow close on his heels , but a few jumps and turns later, he was closer to Vestal. Once they were back on the co ncrete, however, Harlow quickly caught up, and the two were once again racing each other for second. Th is order continued past the crossed nags, until Harlo w got around Shilts and took off down the road. Of course, Shilts was taking back some ground in the dirt , but it wasn't enough . Har low was on the leader's fe nde r within three or four laps alter taking over second place. Vestal managed to ho ld the lead unt il th e white-flag lap, but Harlow was right there, waiting for his cha nce . O n the very last turn be fore the finish line , th at chance came, and Harlow dived inside Vestal and motored to the win. Vestal finished in second, close enough to reach across and hit Harlow's kill switch but he was on the outside and would have had to take his hand off the throttle. R ESULTS SPT MINI : I.
