NO SWEAT T he 2000 SRA U.S. Nat ional Speedw ay Champion , Charlie "The Edge" Venegas, capped an all-arou nd great night of Maita Ford/Fast Fridays Speedway racing with a stellar "banzai" victory in the Scratch main event. Des pite the fact that Ve negas was clearly making good starts all night in his Scratch rides , his chances for success in the Scratc h main seemed d iminished after he drew th e slic k lane -t hre e starting assignment . Howe ver, afte r some intens e traction-search gardening prior to the start, Venegas once again was the first rider off the line when the sta rting tapes went up. Current SRAchamp Scott Brant drew the pole, and he nearly matched Venegas' start and spent the ne xt four laps tradi ng the lead with the scrappy vetera n, despite the nearly disastrous enco unter the two had on the second lap. "O n lap two, Scotty caught some traction in [turn] thr ee and took us out towards the wall," Venegas explained later. " Fort unately , I saw it and was able to stay up, save it, and stay with it." So close was the finish that tra ck announce r Mike Rooney just he ld his fingers about four inches apart when aske d about the margin of victory after the contest. The previou s wee k's doublemain winner, "Flyin' Mike" Faria, finished the main in third place; earlier, he had narrowl y won his Scratch semifinal race at the line to grab the final transfer spot , over a stunn ed Bart ek Bardecki. Bobb y "The Blaze" Hedden fell in his att e mpt to go around the leade rs in the first tum and took hom e t he fourth-place points. In the Hand icap main, former Youth Ch amp ion T:J.
