SupermotoUSA Stoc kto n Se ries Round 4: Stockton Mo tor plex Guisande Grabs the Goldl By BRm SAUNDERS STOCKTON, CA, MAY 30 Thomas Hahn rails a corner en route to the overall 250cc Pro-c lass win at round seven of the Oklahoma State Championship Series at Ponca City. Diamondback Off-Road Championship Series Ro und 2: Diamondback Sports center Mud and Mayhem at Diamondback By TIM BETTIS RESACA, GA, MAY 30 ne week after hosting a Loretta Lynn's qua lifier. Diamondback hoste d round two 01 its Off-Road C hamp ion ship Series. Having seen several days of heavy downpours during the week prior to the race , riders we re care fully inspe cting the track to de termine the best line of attack . The starts were clean and WFO , with only one rider out of 27 classes giving in to the track . The same could not be said for the next secti on , howeve r: Mike Southard. a local ride r and Diamond back regu lar, reported that upward of 30 bikes quickly found the mselves in a muddy pile at t he bottom of just one of the hills. Spe ct at o rs , flagmen a nd o the r rid e rs jumped to he lp "u nst ic k" t he pile . Ra cin g O resumed just as rapidly, w ith a large grou p of riders all fighting for position . Yamaha-mou nted Nick Gentry pulled off an awesome 15:45 first lap, o nly to finish seco nd to fe llow AA ride r Andrew Mauser by two seconds. (Gentry had finished fourt h in the AA class at round one.) As the day wore on, the sun came out , the humidity began to rise, and the riders' speeds we re increasing with the drying of the track . It was no time at all unt il r iders were sailing across the 90·foot table top. W ith th e more experie nced rac ers' day behind the m, the Mini-class ride rs too k to the track. The Beginner Mini class was dom inated by Ho nda pilot Levi Cash, while Junio r Mini r ider Cod y Mull ins a nd Se nior Mini r ide r T im othy Mull ins. bo t h aboard Kawasakis . finishe d first in their res pective classes. D ou nd lo ur 01 the Supe rmotoU SA Stoc kton I"se ries saw a sizable turnout of Supermotard contestants come o ut to test their skills a t Stockton Motorplex. Thirtee n classes compete d for tro phies, with several races going right do wn to the w ire. Race d irecto r Matt Myers altered the track configura tion for round four. making the dirt section exit right onto the front st ra ight. This se tup provided t he fan s in t he sta nds wit h some t hrills, as riders on the big bikes were w heelying halfway up the straight. It was a real crowd -pleaser! Th e day started wi th a ho tly c o nt e st ed Minimotard race. Frankie Garc ia started from pol e positio n o n his highly mo d ified X RIOO. sharing the front row with Brok McAlliste r and Michael Day. Garcia tossed the fast XR into the first corner ahead 01 McAllister's CRF ISO. and afte r a lap the two had pulled a significant lead on t he field . Day was all by himse ll in th ird . watch ing the fe arso me dice betwee n Garcia an d McAlliste r in fro nt of him. Garcia had no room to bre ath e . but he rode a superb race, mak ing no er rors. He took the ha rd-earned wi n. w it h McAllist er an d Day in second an d th ird, respectively. Prod uction Mini is an e ntry-level class, with competitors riding complete ly stock four-stroke bike s u p to I 25cc. Hond a X RIOOs have t he powe r-to-we ight advan tage over t he more modern Yamaha TTR 125s. but the Yamahas are www.cy clenews _ com suspended be tter, and the front disc brake balances out the equat ion so that both bikes are very competitive. Jonathan Kearns and Vincent Guisande staged an epic battle in Production Mini. Kearn s got the ho leshot on his XRIOO, with Guisande in hot purs uit on a TTR 125. They were nose to tail, with Jonathan pulling Vincent a bit on the straight , but the Yamaha rider made up the difference in the dirt. Kearns held on to a slight le ad , but on lap five Guisande put his Fairfield Cycle Ce nter Yamaha in the right spot in the dirt sectio n and came away with the lead. Keams was not giving up. however, and the two battled down to the wire. with Guisande earn ing a well-deserved win. The re was a new face at th e front of the 4S0cc Midd leweight class, as Dre w Dickson domina ted the race . Dickson too k the inside line at the start. with Tyle r and Jaso n Pullen giving chase . "Team Pullen" suffere d from having no team o rders , ho wever, and Tyle r he ld his brot he r " Bling Bllng" u p signi fica nt ly. w hich all owed D ickson to stretc h out an insurmo untable lead. On ce Jason got by Tyler, he ate into Dickson's lead lap after lap. but Dickson held on to clinch his first-eve r 4SOcc-c1ass win. Don Biava and Darrick Luchessi put on the ir usual thrilling battle in t he Vet Open class. with Biava co ming out on top th is time . Guisande and Cycle Pr o' s Brian Pe core scrapped it ou t in the Sports ma n class . and Guisande's youth and exu bera nce wo n out over Pecor e 's seasoned craftiness .
