That's what race veteran Larry lorenz credited /""\.ror his win in the Sen ior 2SOcc class on the fast quarter-mile clay at Mid-Carolina Speedway. The track had de veloped some seriously dry portions duri ng the main event, but officials he ld back on water due to skies that threaten ed to open up at any mom ent . Lorenz ran third for the first two laps and then steadi ly powered his Stee le Cycles Suzuki past his competitors to gain the lead by lap six of the eight-lap main. When later asked if he liked the dry-slick conditions, Lore nz responded: " Nah, it w as th e paper clip that did it . My co il w ire broke off at the co il after pract ice, and Speedy [Davis, a fellow racer] found a paper clip and straight ened it out to use as a conductor. Some zip ties and duet tape , and the bike's never run better." Mike Graff, w ho led for the first five laps on his Suzu ki, took second , w ith Honda ride rs Tomm y Ho well and Vern Morton rou nding out the field.
