The Harley ride" fared better than the racers , as all the ir equipment ended up in good shape . joe Papp was the top dog on the Harley side of the program. Meanwhile, the Speedway portion was a batt le of attrit ion. When all was said and done, Chris "The Kid" Manchester was th e winner of the Scratch main, and Andy "The Enforcer " Northrop was the Handicap winner. Afte r t he heat races , t he first sem i had 5haun Harma tiuk o n the pole, with " Flyin' Mike" Faria in two, and "Fast" Ed Castro and Scotty "The Dominato r " Brant in th ree and four. Faria got out on top, w ith Brant on his rear wheel, and they went one-tw o in the quick four-la pper and headed for the main. Castro and Harmatiuk would get one more shot in the last-chance qualifier . T he second semi had Bo bby "Co wboy" Krips o n t he pol e , with Bobb y " Booga loo " I 40th Anniversary Schwam in two, Charlie "The Edge" Venegas in thr ee and Manchester in fo ur. Venegas got the gate, but Manchester quickly too k the lead, and those tw o captured the top transfer spots for the main. Schwartz and Krips were headed for the Le Q. The pole went to Krips as they lined up for the lCQ, but Cast ro, com ing out of two, was not to be denied. He went out on top an d never looked back. The final spot in the Scratch main was his. The dra w for the main was done on the line, and Manchester drew the pole, with Castro in two and Brant in three. On t he outside we re Venegas and Faria . It was gat e and race to Manchester, though not without a fight from current National champ Brant, who went inside, outside and all around the park trying to find a way aroun d Manchester. Unfortu nately, the track is sma ll and t he race is short, and Brant would have to settle for second. Faria picked up the show money, and Venegas and Krips rounded out the field.
