GENERAL
ADMISSION
After promoter Mike Cuff disqualified him, Russell Pearson explained what happened: '~t the finish I was right in
David's dust, " Russ said. ':At the last alternate [gas stop]
t hey said we had 10 miles [to the finish] from the last
alternate. I could almost see David at that point. I go ,
'I've got 10 miles; I can maybe do it.' I pushed, pushed,
pushed, then all of a sudden there's a dry lake , and I'm
like, 'Man, this looks like the finish.' I'm in his dust so I
can 't make out everything, especially in a KXSOO's dust.
':All of a sudden I see the pits off to the left and the
big flnish banner that we had to go under, so I head to
the finish banner - David had beat me there - and went
through the checkered flag and everything.
':Aguy comes up to me and says, 'Hey, you 're not finished unless you go through that chute.' 50 I looked
back , and there was a chute. It didn 't go all the way to
the finish [banner), though; it was just a little chute about
a hundred feet back or something. 50 instead of arguing
with the guy - I figured I could argue with them later if I
got passed - I just flipped a U and quick as I could went
back to the chute and came through the way I guess I
was supposed to because I didn 't see the chute in the
dust [the first time].
"I came through the chute, crossed the finish line, and
[an official] was like, 'Thanks for coming to the race.'
That was it. I loaded up and headed home.
"The n two nights later - Sunday night, because the
race was Saturday - the guy, Mike Cuff, calls me at 10:30
and tells me I'm disqualified for unsafe riding.
"I go , 'What did I do?'
"He said, 'Yo u roosted on some guy.'
"I go , 'Well, I didn't mean to , and we're on a dry lake.
What am I supposed to do when a guy says I'm not finished when I just Grossed the finish line?'
"There's no way I would want to hurt anybody
because that's not in my riding style ; I would never do
that in my life. It was just a miscommunication. I guess I
missed the finish chute in the dust."
Officials with Sidewinders Motorsports alleged that
when info rmed that he had to go back through the finish
chute, Pearson spun around and heavily roosted those in
the area.
However, AMA Sports rules state that "The final
results posted at the end of the 30-minute protest peri od may not be altered except by the AMA or the appeal
process."Since the organizers didn 't disqualify Pearson
within the specified time frame, the initial results stood,
thereby reinstating Pearson's third-place finish.
