Carlson started the ra ce gridded on the inside of the front row, opposite Andy Fenwick. Buettner and Scott Deidrich were in the two midd le spots . Carlson t ook advantage of his start ing pos ition an d t o o k t he ho les hot . Buettner, Deidr ich , Fenwic k and To m Hickmann gave chase into the dirt . Afte r only six laps, Carlson , Buett ne r and Deidrich we re click ing orr laps in the first three positions. Hickma nn, a supermoto sprint rac e r Iro rn Arizona , was able to stick w ith Fenwick. The first red flag of the race came early. before any pit stops, whe n the Team Wallybike we nt down in the infield. Buettn e r ran fro m the restart until Deidrich was able to get by on the inside. Carlson found his way aroun d the outside into second place . Dan Jannette Jr.'s tea m, from Lapeer, Michigan, was able to run with the leaders for a few laps until they got into lapped traffic. Carlson made full use of the crowd to get around Deidrich and take the lead . This race order continued, e ven a fter the seco nd resta rt, until the checkered flag. At first it seem ed that the HMC team had w o n, b ut the team of De id r ic h a nd C o le walsdcrf had edged the m out. The te am of Jim Pekowsky and Fenw ick rod e to a solid third. Carlson had kept up his bliste ring speed for the whole race , exce pt for the 20 minutes that John Cook, a last minute rep laceme nt for the injured Hansen, was on the bike. Abrigo, a seco nd-year Pro rider from Snohom ish, Washington, walloped the competit ion in the I25cc and 250cc Pro classes and finished second , behind Philip Ehnat, in th e Unlimited Pro class to take hom e the top money. Riding a Suzuki. Abrigo used consiste nt 2- 1 finishes to beat Ross Johnso n in the 12Scc Pro class and the n backed up th ose performances wit h a swe e p of the 2S0cc Pro class, where he again topped the Ho nda-mounted Johnson. Johnson's best perfo rmance of the day came in t he first 12Scc Pro mot a . Joh nson jumpe d ou t fro nt at the start of t he moto , chase d by Abr igo and Ros s' e lder brothe r Tracy. It was Ross, tho ugh. who too k the checke red flag first , t ra iled by Abrigo , Tra cy, Ro yce De vol a nd Donn y 5heatsley. Abrigo garnered the le ad in th e se co nd moro, followed by the Johnson brothers and Sheatsley. Abr igo assumed t he point pos ition and he ld it to the finish to net his first of two overall wins on the day. Ross co uldn't find a way around Abrigo and finished runner-up , ahead of Tracy (3-3), Sheatsley (5-4) and Devol (4-S). Abrigo, who this year cont ested a portion of t he AMA Western Region 125cc Supercross Series. also did damage in the 250cc class. He again had his hands full wit h challeng es from Ross, but in bot h motos Abrigo had an answe r for all of Ross' moves. Ehnat, a for mer Kawasaki rider now aboard Honda machine ry, was th e closest to Abrigo in mota o ne and finished an impressive secon d. Ross couldn't make a pass on Ehnat st ick and trailed Ab rigo at the finish . Abrigo also won mota two , but it was Ross who finished secon d after Ehnat suffered a poor start and spent the rest of t he moto working through the pack to eventually finish fifth, behind Abrigo , Ross, Kiel Krogstadt and Sean Sparkman. There we re seve ral impre ssive Amateurclass perf orm ers, including the broth er s from Albany, Aaron and Travis McClinton , who each carded dual-class wins. Aaron captured wins in the I25cc and Unlimited Junior classes, while his younger sibling Travis was the top perfor me r in W th e 85cc Int erme diate and Supermini classes . Aaro n posted two strong ride s in th e day 's largest class, the 125cc Junior class, winning the first moto and backing up that performance with a seco nd-place finish beh ind another local ride r, Nick Randklev, in mota two to win the overall. Another race r a m o ng th e multitude of Washingtonian s on hand. Kevin Urquha rt , was th e domi nant rider in t he 12Scc , 2S0cc a nd Unlimited Intermedi at e clas ses . The Ho nda pilot fro m Ke nt clobbered the competition in th e 125cc Intermediate class, w inning both motos. Initially it looked like Mike Probst had the , first -moto w in locked in for t he O ver 40 Novice class. as he he ld off a two- lap assa ult from Peter Davenport, followed by the ramrodding Raster. On the final lap, Raster slipped by Probst to take the moto win. In the second go-around , Probst again jumped into the lead, but Raster got by on th e fourt h lap to take another win and the overall. Probst (2-3) fell off the pace, and Bob Walpert (4-2) slipped by to lock in third overall. Adding to the day's excitement was the return of Glen Helen's hairpin left-tum start, which drew plenty of oohs and ahhhs from the spectato rs. Richard Kastner cleaned house in th e first Over 40 Amateur moto, muc h to the dismay of Kenny Campbell and Philip Maust. who vied for se co nd- place honors. How ever, t he second mota was a differ ent story. Kastner barely had a w heel a n Maust whe n he cro ss-rutted, resulting in bo th riders' going down . After unt angling the ir mounts. Kastner charged thr ough the pack to finish th ird , fo r seco nd overall. Maust was not so lucky: He muster ed only eight h after a pro longed restart . Cam pbell 's second-m ote w in was good en ough for the overall class win. Anthon y Wi lliam (7- 2) ma d e a dramat ic comebac k ride in t he sec ond moto to finish third overall. Willie Musgrave leaped into the lead in both Master A motos and never loo ked back . Los Angeles OTMX guest Bob Johnson gave chase but could ne ver ge t close t o th e ora nge helmeted blur! I Dave Eropkin had a long-overdue win in the Master B class, beating out Kirk Bassett (2-2). Plag ued by bad luck, t hird - p lac e d Ross Thompson ro de with a flat tire the ent ire first mota, only to stall in the second stanza. Despite being airlifted with a concussion just a month ago, Phil Black was back, w inning both motes o f the O ver 60 Amat eurs. Black was run ning up front with t he leaders of t he Ove r 50 Amateu rs in the first moto but got a bad start th e se co nd time around. Chuck Woody led the class for a short lap, but Black re w ed past with lillie fight. Not far beh ind, AI Smith a nd Fra nk Derby mixed it up fo r th ird an d fourth, respectively. Powering his big Yam aha to a sizable lead in the first Over 40 Expert heat , John Estes thought he had the numbe r-o ne spot locked up , but Dave Viscioso snaked by on the white-flaglap for the overall win. Trailing in third was Bill Schultz. Ron Ryer was on pace to win the Ov er 50 Amateur contest , but midway through both heats, Tony Duni charged past , finishing first , ahead of several younger riders on the first-wave start . Motorcycl e Racing Associotion of Nevada Round 7: Southern Nevada Desert Ra cers Me Phillips Head Honcho at the Hamel Hare 'n' Hound By MICHAEL COLUNS PANACA, NV APR. 24 , or th e first har e 'n' hound of th e MRAN season , riders tra veled to Panaca, Nevada, to test t he ir ridi ng skills along the 9S-mil e course . The Southern Ne vada Desert Racers des igned a mass st a rt by d ivisio n, w it h th e Experts leading the way across the vtrgin-terrain start. The start was about half a mile long befor e picking up the single-track course th at wou ld lead t he ride rs t hrough sa nd washes, trees , fields, rocky byways, and a cow pasture. The first leg was 42 miles, and the second was 53 mile s. All Superminis, Minis and Big-Bike Novices only had to do the first leg, leaving t he ne xt S3 miles for the Big-Bike Exp e rts and Amateurs. With Matt Gosnell. the current number-one plate ho lde r and th e on ly rider to claim an overall in the first six MRAN races , gone racing for Sportsman Cycle and KTM at the Best in the Dese rt race in Pahru mp , there was going to be a new ove rall winner.
