MAPLESVILLE, AL, APR. 25
he famous Reynolds' Pasture was the centra l location for another great event hosted
by the Perry Mountai n Motorcycle C lub. The
wea ther was perfect as the almost 200 en tered
racers lined up fo r ro und four of the SERA hare
scrambles season.
T he ma n to beat was Gas Gas -s ponsored
Stephe n Ree d , as he's ta ken the first t hree
ro unds of the season. Along with all the other
AA racers, Reed line d up, just waiting for that
flag to drop, ready to try to get that co vet ed
holesh ot . The bragging rights went to Yamaha
rider Kyle He nde rso n, who led the way to the
creek crossing.
The wate r went spraying as the racers
cha rged through. Some decide d just to jump
t he creek and sk ip the fre sh -w at e r bath
altogether. From there, they headed up into the
rocky Alabama hills to start the first of their
seven 7-rrule laps. The rocks were tough, but it
seemed tha t dust would be the main hazard.
Reed soon took over first, leaving AA racers
Mike Monroe, Landon Carter, Glen Myatt and
Carsten Cagte in pursuit.
On the third lap, Reed found himself be ing
tailed by Cagle . However. Cagle had a spill and
lost time to Ree d . As Myatt and Monroe fell
even further back, Cagle and Carter tried to get
Reed in the ir sights, but it just wasn't happen ing.
Cagle had once again started to gain on Reed

blinded by the dust , hit a washout and did a
horrifying endo.
"All you could see was his bike flipping
through the air," said one spectator, "but be fore
anyone cou ld get to him, he was up and gone."
W ith his adrenali ne kicking in , Cagle
managed to keep his pos ition in the race , bu t he
finished more than two minu tes be hind Reed ,
who cloc ked in with an awesome time of one
hou r, 40 minut es and 32 seco nds . Fort unat ely,
Cag le ke pt his sec on d-place pos it io n;
unfortunately, he will be o ut of the sport for a
w hile due to the major injuries he sustai ned in
the flip.
Fo llow ing close behi nd third-placed Cart e r
were Open A racers Ta ylo r Re yn o ld s a nd
Wesley Wyatt. Though Wya tt le d the fors t lap
fo r his class , he was soon o ver come by
Re yno lds, who dominated the class fo r the
re mainder of the event. Reyno lds took fourth in
one hour, 46 minutes and IS seconds, wh ile
Wyatt too k flfth 30 seconds later.
Some extremely talented B-c1 racers also
ass
man aged to break into the top 20. The very
impressive you ng Open B rider Dustin Stevens
capped off the top 10, flnishing in one hour. 52
minutes and 16 seconds on his new Suzuki RM.
Following in 13th overall and second in Open B
was Ste vens ' competitor Lee Everett. Vet B
racer and former motocrosser Scott Hubbard
took 15th overall and first in his class.
A aro n Siminoe had just returned from the
/""\.A.mateur pressure cooker of the World Mini
Grand Prix wh en he arrived at round nine of the
MX West Spring Series . yet he actually looked
the better fo r wear, as he pounde d out two
moto wins to top the 60cc Intermed iate class.
The KTM·moumed Siminoe didn't have light
competition, though, as his brother Ty Siminoe
and Suzuki pilo t Garrett Baxt e r never let him
breathe too easily. Aaro n gra bbed the lea d early
in the first moto, ahead of Ty and Baxter, who
soon began a batt le for sec ond . Aaron was able
to stretch his lead on his way to the win, while
Ty and Baxte r d iced with each other. Ty, who
turned in a very impressive performance at the
Wor ld Mini by win ni ng t w o 5 0cc cl asse s ,
showed im pressive gri t by ho lding back t he
hard- charging Baxte r fo r second.
Aaron con tro lled the race once again on his
way to t he second-mo to win , while Ty and
Baxte r o nce more fo ugh t over second. This
time , however, Baxter go t the upper hand over
the younger Siminoe to claim second for the
mo to and on the day.
Another rider fre sh fro m the World Minis,
Jimmy Hazel, rode four very impressive metes
to top the 12Scc and 2SOcc Pro classes . Haze l'.
day started somewhat poorly, though , when
trouble on the start of the first 125cc Pro moto
left him in last place on the forst lap. He quickly
went to work aboard his YZ25 0 F. g rabbing
second place by the halfway poin t . beh ind
Tommy Jea n's RM 125, but Jean maintained a
very quick pace, and Ha zel had to settle for
second in the mo to .
www.cyclenews.com
T he second moto began with Jean out front
again and Hazel again workin g his way through
the pack. However, this time Hazel picked up
the pace and arrived on Jean's rear fende r in the
final laps of the race. The two engaged in an epic
battle on the last lap. as Jean kep t his Suzuki just
ahead of the persistent Hazel. It wasn't until the
fina l turns t hat Haze l pulled alongside Je an,
edging pas t him by inches at the finish line to
score the moto win and the ove rall.
Jean bes ted Hazel to win the first 250cc
moto, but Haz e l again u pped his pace in the
second round . Hazel battled past early leader
To ny Evans late in the se cond moto, as Jean
struggled a few seconds back after some early
m ista kes. Ha ze l scored the moto win and
another overall victory through his 2-1 posting,
while Jean snagged se co nd wit h a 1-3 tally.
Evans' 4-2 score earned him third overall.
O nly one round remains in the MX West
Spring Series, to be held at the serpentine
Loveloc k, Nevada, course. T he n it'll be time for
a bit of night racing, to avoid the burning heat
that se tt le s upon su mmer afternoons in the
Nevada desert.

Round 2: Nasty Creek
Leivan Gets a
Nast One
STEELVILLE, MO, APR. 25
C RlYa ma ha rider Steve Le ivan had a full
weekend planned . He would compete on
Saturday in Muskogee, O klaho ma. at rou nd fou r
of the Black Jack Enduro Circuit, and then drive
more than 350 miles to participate in the Nasty
Creek-sponsored second round of the Missouri
Hare Scrambles Championship Series . It was a
lofty goal just to compete in two races , but
Le ivan had a bigger goal in mind: to win them
both. In the end, that's exactly what happened .
