X 395, the long uphill, was visible in the
distance long before the riders actually
arrived at Honey Lake Motocross Park. Many
riders arrived at the track by Friday aftemoon
for the prac tice offered by track owner larry
Wosick, who had watered and prepared the
track since early in the week to be certain that
it was as perfect as he cou ld make it for this
fifth ro und of the series, hosted by the Sierra
O ld-Time rs Chapter. The reputation and popularity of Ho ney Lake drew more than 280 riders - including Old-Timers, family support,
M
M inibike ri ders and the Over The H ill Gang -
from as far away as Cana da. Arizona and easte rn Idaho .
After practice, those riders new to Ho ney
Lake could o nly say, ''Aweso me track!"
After Saturday morning's practice, Sierra O ldTimers president Jerry Winkelbauer held a brief
riders' meeting, and just after 9 a.m. the Over 70
Experts were off and charging up the long uphill
start. It was evident all day long that the big-bore
four-strokes had a distinct advantage over the
250cc machines. whether two-stroke or fourstroke. The power of British Columbia's Zoli
Berenyi's KX250 was only a temporary problem
on the starts, as he soon charged past Sierra's
Max Goode and into the lead for the win. Berenyi
won three out of four motes for the overall class
victory on the weekend.
One of the really great stories of the
weekend was that of Sierra rider Stuart
Douglas , who was bumped from the Over 50
Amateurs to the Over 50 Experts after winning
the first Ama teur moto by a large margin .
Douglas had only recently won his first mota as
an Amateur. Proud of his advancement. he set
out to prove he was worthy. He did: Douglas
won his first mota as an Expert, and then the
next one, too. A sixth -place finish in the fourth
moto set him back some, but then he won the
fifth moto to end the day. Douglas had not only

won his first mota as an Expert , but the overall
victory as well! His fellow Sie r ra rid er Jack
Ba ke n was a strong second, and Rocky
Mountain's Mark Melehes was a close third .
Sierra's Paul Armada placed second in the
first Over 40 Expert rnoto after being chased
d own by Re d d ing , California's Ke nny
Thorensen. Then Annada ran away and hid for
the next fo ur motes, winning the overall. With
only 2S0cc, Thorensen was unable to get the
sta rts needed to stay close to Annada.
The Master A class featured close racing
a mo ng Sierra ri ders Eric McKenna, D ave
Cou pe and British Col umb ia's John Verdo nk.
Coupe typically was out of the gate first, with
the other two close behind. Usually, McKenna
wo uld charge pas t Coupe early in t he mo to
and open up a co mfortable lead. Cou pe was
unable to rest at all, though, becau se Verdonk
was right on h im in eac h mota and took
secon d , a head of him, in the fina l moto .
McKenna won the overall with five wins out of
eN
five tries.
