MAY 19,2004 • CYCLE NEWS or the 2004 season, the 5TTARS5upermoto Series features a six-race Winter Series held at Gra nge Motor Circuit , in addition to a five venue Sou thwest Series and several stand-alene exhibition races . Th e final round of the Winter Series also acte d as roun d two of the Southwest Series . Promoter Don Canet ren ted the Grange facility on Saturday so t hat riders could get some practice in a nonrace environment. Three Brothers Racing, the wi nter se ries ' sponso r, hosted a Brazilian barbec ue on Sa t urday evening and again on Sunday aftern oon for all in attendance. Super Moto Racer magazine test rider Gary Trachy came to Grange w ith the points lead in both the 450 cc and Open Expe rt classes . The Hahm Moto rsports/Marzocchi/Provalve racer needed to ride conservatively to claim the tw o Winter Series titles but also aggress ively e nough to build on his Southwest Series standin gs. First up was the 450cc race . Trachy had to co nte nd with Northern Cal iforn ia's fastes t Leonardo Bagnis. Trachy grabbed the holeshot and led from start to finish in a rac e that saw Bagnis, a forme r World Superbike competitor and the 2002 STTARS Prem ier-class champion, pressure Trachy the entire way. Later in the day, the two again faced off in the main event, Open Expert, a class w ith no machine requ irements . Bagnis parked his 450cc Honda and broug ht out the big gun, an 5RS70 Vertemati that his competitors simply describe as "extremely fast. " Bagnis too k the holeshot , w ith Juan "Burrito " Bena videz and Trachy in t ow. A fe w laps in. Benavidez crashed , and Trachy moved within stri king distance of Bagnis. At this point, Plan A (" Be conservative and clinch the title") was replaced by Plan B (" I th ink I can w in this thing!"). W hile the two leade rs were battling up front , Micky Dymond was slow ly gaining ground . Dymond' s progress came to a dramatic halt when he was violently thrown over the bars on the dirt -to-pavement transition. Trachy had bee n sizing up Bagnis for a pas s over the twin d o ubl e jum ps , but Dymond's crash broug ht out a wav ing ye llow nag in that area, which means no pass ing. for t he remai nder of t he race. Bagnis lost his rearb ra ke ca liper ha lfway th roug h the race ; it actually flew off the bike and bounced across the track . The Michelin/ Moto-Conneetion/East Hills Motors po rts rid e r quickly ad justed t o riding wit ho ut the rear brake and held Trachy off to the checkers. Trachy accomplished Plan A by claiming two Winter Series championships. The Vet class (for riders over 35) has been domina ted by former Maico factory motocro ss st a r Be na vid e z. With the support of w w w.3bros .com and a potent e ngine from Varne r Motorsports, Benavidez made a clean sweep of the W inter Series, winn ing all six rounds . The 250cc class is presented by De l Amo Motors ports , and , fittingly enough, De l Amo owner Pablo Veglia and his Yamaha YZF250 took the win - and the title - over a small fleet of immac u late ly prepa red Kawasakis . Sportsman, Beginner and Novice classes have seen huge growth t h is season . Eric " Ge t a Hai rcut! " Welch cla imed the Nov ice -class victory. R ESULTS BEG: I.
