''About three- quarters of a mile from the pit [2], I went down hard in one of the washes the re; it was real rocky," he said. "I just overshot a tum and we nt down rea lly hard, ripped the who le thr ottle off, and the front brake [leve r turned] underneath [the handlebar] and everythi ng. I got it started and pulled the [throttle] cable and made it into the pits pullingthe cable. I kind of had a broken hand from last weekend, [too] ." F14 Andy Grider Ty Davis doesn't plan on riding the rest of the series. "No way," he said. "Ou r bike's not a 650 Honda. We feel it [the displacement disadvantage] when we get to the wide -open roads. When we get to the wide -open roads, you can tell we stay the same speed - we can't catch 'em. As soon as we get into the tight, we go vroom, right up to them . It's just scary [with the speeds we 're going). I'm gett ing too old to be do ing this kind of stuff." O f the 83 bike and ATYteam s that started, 58 finished the 240-mile cours e. The last offi cial bike/ATY finisher was hometow n boy jer ry Ely, who ended up sixth lron man Amate ur in 9;01:50. Chri, Terres . 8th overall/2nd Fo ur-Stroke Pro In his first race back after injuries suffered two months ago at San Felipe, Gride r said, "[My ride] was pretty typical of me at Terrible's Town - I don't have much luck here," he said. "But at mile I I, 12, the fuel line came off the bike! It was still res ting on the to p of the [fitting on the carburet or] so it was stillgetting fuel, but as soon as it was empty, it was out . It just ran out of gas. I was stuck there. I had to hike up to the highway and bum some gas off a chase truc k and come back. I could only get a gallon, and I had to go 25 miles [to the next pit], so I had to milk it to the pit. It was definitely a 'fun' day at Terrible's Town." The first Expe rt team to the finish turned ou t to be a trio of cagey veterans - Rodger McCabe, Marty j. Smith and Larkin Wight , who shared a Cee Pee/FMF/GPR-sponsored KTM to the Over 40 Expert victory and an outstand ing sixth ove rall. Honda -mounted Shane jeckel of Colorado not only topped the Ironman Amateur class, he also beat all the other "yellow -plate rs" to the finish on adjusted time, placing26th overall. A blown stator put the Pau l Krause/Elmer Symons effort on the sidelines for an extended per iod while they replaced it with o ne from a spare machine they had. They finally rejoined the chase to finish third Four-Stroke Pro and I Ith overall. Among the truck and buggy crowd we re seve ral names familiar to the two-wheeled set. Larry Roeseler and his partners won Class 7200 (mini tru cks), while Kelby Pepper and Wayne Intermill (former e nduro racers from Colorado) too k sixth in Class 1000 for limited buggies. www.cyclenews.com CYCLE NEWS • MAY 12, 2004 85
