enior-class rider Richard Pollock scored two
wins as Perris Raceway's new dirt ovaJ host ed its very first race and as the Southern Californ ia Flat Track Assoc iation finalty came to race
at the historic venue . Tho ugh delays had
become the nonn as the track was being carved
out of the bedrock, the wait was defin itely
worth wh ile . Well over a hundred r iders
showed up for the opening race .
Larry Smith III jum ped out in front of the
first race of t he day, leading the Youth 6Scc
riders, only to lows ide in tum three, handing
the lead to Kyle Logan. Then Logan and Hunter
Carlson both came past again, putting Smith a
lap down. Smith finally got restarted, getting his

lap back and passing Carlson for second. Logan
took the first main-event win on the new track,
followed by Smith and Carlson.
Logan als o took the X R I00 Youth class,
ahead of Michael Fox and Amanda Bryant, who
was just back (rom injuries.
Many riders are com ing out of "retire ment" :
Don Frauenberger ran away with the XR I00
Men 's race , leading Frank Araga ki and Vince
Graves ; Ron Moore's return was a little
tougher, as Dick Fox and Mel Stoner hounded
him for the entire Supe r Senior race .
The Bomber class is becoming one of the
mo st hotly contested, with many of So Cal's top
Vintage ride rs coming out to bang bars. Tom
Horton grabbed the holeshot, but Steve Miller
slipped up the inside to take the lead and never
loo ked back. Miller, Horton and Michael O'Neal
led the pack the first time around , but first-time
Bomber Kevin Knudsen was pushing towa rd the
front , dropping O'Neal and closing on Horton.
Jeff Apple followed Knudsen , but Knudsen
dropped Horton to th ird , leaving App le to
battle Hort on. Miller pulled off the w in, w ith
Knudsen in the runner-up spot, followed by
Horton, Apple and Joe Steffen.
Richard Pollock's first win of the day came in
the growi ng Senior class, in which he defeated
Horto n, Brad Holt and Graves, only to have
back-eo-back races wit h the Vet class coming
up right afte r. Jeff Johnson took the Vet w in,
over Pollock, with John Lundgren third.
When the Pros lined up, Pollock grabbed
the lead, tailed by A J. Herrera, Johnson and
Elliott Iverson . Craig Joh nson too k advantage
of bobbles by Jeff Johnson and Iverson to pull
into third . At the line , it was Pollock with his
second win of the day, with Herrera, Craig ,
Jeff and Aragaki in tow.
Normal teeth ing problems wit h a new
racet rack we re noticeably absent. A water
truck and gra der were on hand an d used
regularly, hoses were available in the infield
for spo t watering, and even a bar be que was
set up in t he p its . Unseasonably warm
weather made it difficult to keep the surface
In perfect race co ndition, but there was
never any excessive dust , and the slick. wet
conditi o ns of practice were never seen
during the races. lighting is in the works,
and the new surface should be awesome at
night.
