Briefly... Four prominent mountains surround the Edd ieville Euro GP track , making for some incredible scenery. Mount Hood, Mount St. Hele ns, Mount Adams, and Mount Rainier can all bee n see n from the track on a clear day, such as it was allweekend. For the WO RCS race, the track was around six miles in length and featured multiple places to pass. The WO RCS crew disked the track between races , and, according to the riders, it made for some really fun racing. Most said that they thought it was a track that favored foursto kes; however, Bonds seemed to disagree. Six of the top 10 and four of the top five riders were four-st roke mounted. For this race, the WO RCS promoters hired a helicopte r to film the first t hree laps of the Pro race . WO RCS is working on an hour-long feature highlighting the series that willair on Fox Spo rts Net and Fox's extreme channel, Fuel. The racers appreci ated the extra effort to get good film; however, the helicopter creat ed some blowing dust for the racers . But according to Lance Smail, who got a chance to view some of Now it was Woods leadi ng again, fo llow ed by Davis, Bonds, Sma il and Caselli, who began to fade and was losing po sit ions fast . " I tried too hard at the beginning and pumped up, " Caselli said . ':t\t that po int , I had to slow down a nd relax and regroup." Bonds , however, was the man on th e move. W ithin the first lap , he moved from 12th to within st riking d istance of seco nd place Woods. Shortly thereafter, on the seco nd lap , Bon d s and Woods emerged from a long sweeper neck and nec k, and Bond s he ld it on longer off a speed jump and swoope d into the lead. For all int e nts and pu rposes, the race for the win was over right the n, as the Kawasa ki rider simply checked out on the rest of the field. Bonds w as a full 10 seconds a lap faster than his closest competito r. Behind Bo nds, Smail was now hounding Woods a nd Davis. Smail put on a hard charge and by the fourth lap was in sec ond, getting around bo th of the Yamaha riders. And he was making Bonds nervous . " My day was go ing good out in front ," Bonds said , "but Sma il was keeping me honest, so I had to keep pushing." Not far behind t he Bo nd s, Smai l, Woods and Davis pack chased another www.cyclenews.com the footage after the race, the slight inconvenience was we llworth it. "That footage is some of the greatest racing action I've ever seen, and I'm not just saying that because I'm in it," he said. "It is really good ." Speaking of Lance Smail, his knee is in pretty bad shape. He's hoping to have it worked on as soon as he can so he can be ready for the second half of the series. "I might go to Utah [for the next round] for my team, but I don't think I'llbe riding," he said. ''I'm going to see how it goes . I'm definitely going to get it fixed as soon as possible. I feel I can win these races if I'm 100 percent . I don't like riding around to place. I ride to win. With the talent that is out there in the WORCS series, I need to be 100 per cent to w in." Bob by Bo nds hasn't ruled out racing in the upcoming outdoo r National MX Series. He says he is trying to get a bike lined up and figures that he'll wind up loading up his truck and, along with his roo mmate, go for broke. CYCLE NEWS • APRIL 14, 2004 S3
