STOCKTON, CA, FEB. 29
T
he season opener at Sto ckto n proved that
Nort he rn California is a hub in t he fast gr owing sport of supe rm ot o . More than 200
en trie s cont ributed to the success of the first
competition of the year, and unlike last year, the
grid in almost every class was full. The track at
Stockton was tra nsformed dur ing the off season , an d for 2004 it sports a ne w and muc h
improved dirt section.
So me o f the best ra cing on Sunday took
place in the new 2SOcc Ughtweigh t class. Local
rock star Bo b by Fang, s porti ng a set of
diamo nd earrings, qualified on t he fron t row.
T he Ame rican Suzuki-sp o nsore d Fa ng was
e xpected to run away with it o n his RM Z250,
but he had a to ugh t ime with o ne of his dirt track rivals, Joe He rnandez . Riding a tried-and true yz 125, Hernandez let Fang yard him a bit
at the start , but as the laps went on, he began
to gain. Fang and Hernandez gapped the field,
as Bro k McAllist e r. Cameron Beau bie r and
Ga rrett Will is fou ght it o ut be h ind t he m .
McAll ist er hung t o ugh o n hl s beau t ifu lly
prepared McAl lister Motorsports C RF2S0, but
midway th rough the race, I l-year -old Beaubier
was just too tou gh for him, and McAllister had
to let him by. As Beaubie r gained o n the lead
pair, Hernande z inc hed close r and clo ser to
Fa ng. Near mo ta' s en d, however. Hernandez
went down on lap 10 , just as he was ge tti ng
Fa ng in his Sights. Fa ng cru ised to the checkers,
with Beaubier second and Garre tt Willis nipping
McAllister for the final pod ium spot .
The first Unlimi ted Pre st ige ra ce of t he
season w ill be t o ugh to to p, as far as close
racing and excitement are co ncerned . Leonardo
" Pucho" Bagnis. on his Motosuano Ve rt e mati,
got a great start , and he led the pack for the
first ha lf of lap one, but Steve Dre w wasn't
about to let him keep the lead through the dirt
section . Dre w passed Bagnis, and the two
established a rhyt hm : Drew wou ld pull away in
th e d irt , but Bagnis wo uld cat ch him on t he
pavem en t. They raced like that for six laps until
Bagnis start ed showing Dr ew a wheel in turn
on e, the fast swe e pe r. Drew gapped Pucho
some in the dirt section, but Bagnis was not to
be denied : On lap eight, he got by Drew. O nce
he got in fro nt, Bagnis showed Dre w an d
Casey Yarrow, who was wa tch ing fro m third
place - w hy he owns th e num be r-o ne plate.
T he big Vertemat i was im po ssi ble to pa ss,
tho ugh Drew gave it his all. Wh en the checkers
drop pe d , it wa s Bag ms, Drew and Yarrow,
Leonardo "Pucho" Bagnis proudly bears the checkered flag
after winning the first Unlimited Pre5tige race of the season
in Stockton, California.

Fitch Fights Backl

w:

num be r o f riders skipped t his sec o nd
ra ce of the se aso n on Feb ruary 29 at Azt ec
Family Raceway in Colora do Springs beca use of
th e co ld winter w eathe r. The ride rs who did
show up we re dressed wa rmly, ready to hit the
track. In fact, they wou ld have finished the day
if it hadn't be en for the w ind-c hill factor that
finally forced the off icials to cancel the last couple of motes out of conce rn for the trac k nagge rs, who had been standing o ut in the frigid
weather for hours.
Yamaha ride r Bobby Fit ch , spon so re d by
Vickery Mot 05p0rts , was the story of the day.
Fitc h had n' t be e n o n the ra cing sce ne fo r a
couple of years, but in the first two races of the
se aso n, he has pu t the Pro classes on noti ce
that he is back in town . A few of his starts and a
little bit of wild riding someti mes saw him go
down or get caught way back in traffic, but with
determinatio n he would dr ive right back up to
th e fron t . He m igh t be se c o nd aro und t he
corner and the n disap pear; one would scan the
back of the pack to find him, but by the next lap
he'd be back up in the hunt , chasing down the
top three guys . O n t his day, Fitch w on th e
250cc A class, finishe d sec o nd ove ra ll in th e
O pe n A c1as5, and placed third In the 12Scc A
class.
Me anw hile , t he o t her s t o ry of th e da y
reg arded an other Vicke ry Motos po rts ride r,
IS-year -old Hunte, Meyer, who gave the Pr05,
including Fitch , a run for their money . Riding a
Kawa5aki in the 12Scc ( 14- 24 ) c1a5s on t he
40t h Ann iversary
same gate with the 12Scc Pros, Meye r bo lted
whe n t he bar dro ppe d in t he se co nd mo to ,
t ook t he ho les hot, a nd led t he o lder ra cers
around the track for several laps. Des pite the
pres sure from behind , he di d not give up
position easily. and he didn't back down on one
comer, in part icular, tapping veteran Pro Jared
Ca rlson , who conceded th e c o r ner but
proce e d ed t o pas s Me yer lat er in t he lap.
However, Meyer's abili y to maintain his speed
t
and his composure throug hou t th e race wa s
impressive .
