More than 200 en trie s cont ributed to the success of the first competition of the year, and unlike last year, the grid in almost every class was full. The track at Stockton was tra nsformed dur ing the off season , an d for 2004 it sports a ne w and muc h improved dirt section. So me o f the best ra cing on Sunday took place in the new 2SOcc Ughtweigh t class. Local rock star Bo b by Fang, s porti ng a set of diamo nd earrings, qualified on t he fron t row. T he Ame rican Suzuki-sp o nsore d Fa ng was e xpected to run away with it o n his RM Z250, but he had a to ugh t ime with o ne of his dirt track rivals, Joe He rnandez . Riding a tried-and true yz 125, Hernandez let Fang yard him a bit at the start , but as the laps went on, he began to gain. Fang and Hernandez gapped the field, as Bro k McAllist e r. Cameron Beau bie r and Ga rrett Will is fou ght it o ut be h ind t he m . McAll ist er hung t o ugh o n hl s beau t ifu lly prepared McAl lister Motorsports C RF2S0, but midway th rough the race, I l-year -old Beaubier was just too tou gh for him, and McAllister had to let him by. As Beaubie r gained o n the lead pair, Hernande z inc hed close r and clo ser to Fa ng. Near mo ta' s en d, however. Hernandez went down on lap 10 , just as he was ge tti ng Fa ng in his Sights. Fa ng cru ised to the checkers, with Beaubier second and Garre tt Willis nipping McAllister for the final pod ium spot . The first Unlimi ted Pre st ige ra ce of t he season w ill be t o ugh to to p, as far as close racing and excitement are co ncerned . Leonardo " Pucho" Bagnis. on his Motosuano Ve rt e mati, got a great start , and he led the pack for the first ha lf of lap one, but Steve Dre w wasn't about to let him keep the lead through the dirt section . Dre w passed Bagnis, and the two established a rhyt hm : Drew wou ld pull away in th e d irt , but Bagnis wo uld cat ch him on t he pavem en t. They raced like that for six laps until Bagnis start ed showing Dr ew a wheel in turn on e, the fast swe e pe r. Drew gapped Pucho some in the dirt section, but Bagnis was not to be denied : On lap eight, he got by Drew. O nce he got in fro nt, Bagnis showed Dre w an d Casey Yarrow, who was wa tch ing fro m third place - w hy he owns th e num be r-o ne plate. T he big Vertemat i was im po ssi ble to pa ss, tho ugh Drew gave it his all. The ride rs who did show up we re dressed wa rmly, ready to hit the track. In fact, they wou ld have finished the day if it hadn't be en for the w ind-c hill factor that finally forced the off icials to cancel the last couple of motes out of conce rn for the trac k nagge rs, who had been standing o ut in the frigid weather for hours. Yamaha ride r Bobby Fit ch , spon so re d by Vickery Mot 05p0rts , was the story of the day. Fitc h had n' t be e n o n the ra cing sce ne fo r a couple of years, but in the first two races of the se aso n, he has pu t the Pro classes on noti ce that he is back in town . A few of his starts and a little bit of wild riding someti mes saw him go down or get caught way back in traffic, but with determinatio n he would dr ive right back up to th e fron t . He m igh t be se c o nd aro und t he corner and the n disap pear; one would scan the back of the pack to find him, but by the next lap he'd be back up in the hunt , chasing down the top three guys . O n t his day, Fitch w on th e 250cc A class, finishe d sec o nd ove ra ll in th e O pe n A c1as5, and placed third In the 12Scc A class. Des pite the pres sure from behind , he di d not give up position easily. and he didn't back down on one comer, in part icular, tapping veteran Pro Jared Ca rlson , who conceded th e c o r ner but proce e d ed t o pas s Me yer lat er in t he lap.
