Round 3: Creek County Fairgrounds
Cartwright s Round Up
Creek County Win s
BY DAN MAHONY
SAPULPA, OK, FEB. 21
D
espite chilly weather, round three of the
Yahoo Indoo r Short Track Series, presented by Eric's Off-Road , saw an e nthusiastic
crowd, if not a full field of riders. What the
races lacked in quantity, however, they made up
for in quality, as close and fast racing dominated
the evening.
Bran don Cartwright w on the Open Pro
final, but it wa s no walk in the park. After a
de feat in the heat rac e at the hands of Jo e
Duvall, the lanky local eked out a victory, barely
holding off Duvall at the checkers . Jeff Bostic
kept the duo honest with a close third place,
over Adams Racing's Bret Sowders. Russell
Mar lin a nd So wd ers co nt inu e d t he ir barbashing, leg-rubbing, series-l ong duel, and th is
time Marlin paid the price with a soil sample , as
the youngste r is still learning the intricacies of
Open Pro indoo r short-trac k racing.
Cartwright's pap a Danny is (again) out of
retirement . He won the Vintage Pro main wit h
a cool move aro und "Mavin' Mike" Baue r and
Kevin Ellingsw o rth . Derek Marlow finishe d
fourth , ahead of hard- luck Jerry Hinds, who
broke his ow n bike, then borrowed one, and
then highsided mightily on the start. Always the
tro uper, Hinds dusted himse lf off fo r the
restart, but afte r the checkers he slowly rode
over to the amb ulance, doub led over with bad
pain in his ribs.
The Mad Dog Mini Pro main was another
good war. Mike Hinds and factory Suzuki star
AJ. Eslick ran bar to bar for the distance , with
the decision going to "Happy" Hinds. "Red -flagit is" plagued this even t, also , as Eslick and
Marlin ta ngled , stopping the race in t he first
tu rn . Randy King finished fourt h, over Wyatt
Brown .
The biggest class of the night was the Open
division. After one restart, Ian Washburn got a
great holesh ot and never looked back e n route
to vict ory. Mike Lawrence had a ll he could
handle just kee ping Washburn in sight. The two
heat-race winners finished ahead of Missouri's
Chad Beckley, in his first visit to the series. Joe
Matt ox finished fourth , over John ny Smith,
Dylan Marlin, Brian Sharp , Steve Pooler and
Karl Har ris. Beckley's a fast learner: He won
the 250cc Pro final, over Duvall.
" No w I know why they ca ll it ' Ya ho o ,'"
Beckley said later.
Mattox outdueled another first-time r, Sharp,
for the trophy in the I25ccl25Occ contest. Heat
winner Sharp finished in front of Jason Frazier,
Harris, Steve Lymanand Dalton Mariin.
Hunter King, who earlier made a grea t pass
for his heat-race win, again had to overcome
the quick-starting Austin Madrano to win th e
80cc gold. Fred Mattox came home third.
Fred bested the Pee Wee S I- IOOcc field,
w inning handily over C olton Stevens, Te rry
Mattox. Tanne r Hilland Hunte r Watson. Braden
Teeman bested his brother Sheldon for the Pee
Wee 50cc honors ; Stevens pushed the duo but
had to settle for th ird. Wes Harrell, Von Gray
and Watson rounded out the field.
Only two points races remain on the se ries
schedule.
