San Jo se Fairgrounds Carriger Carries the Checkersl By KAREN GOULD SAN JOSE, CA, MAR. 6 t 's been a long time since there has been f lattrack racing in San Jose, California, but it happen ed on this night. On Wednesday, the area that was going to be the track was under a huge puddle of wat er. After cutting down abo ut five feet to get to th e dry dirt, construction of this oval tra ck started . Inte nded to be a cushion, the track was banked and bumpy for the Moto west opener. Sco tt Corsetti a nd Za no tt i Raci ng's Mikie Rush gave Carriger a run for his money . Rush came alongside Carriger on more than one lap. When Rush bobbled, Corsetti got by t o finish sec ond . Stevie Bonse y wa s no slouch, finishing fourth , behind Rush. Bot h Bonse y an d Rush are too young t o compe t e in the Ope n A d ivis io n in AMA co mp etitio n. Carriger start e d riding at age ] and rod e regu larly unt il, at 18, he was a Pro rider riding at the front of the pack wit h Rod Spence r, Dana Perri and the other fast boys. He joined the Navy and put away his motorcycles for the next 16 years . In 200 2, Carriger got a bike and start ed riding again. Getti ng his feet we t, he rode some of the CMA open-traction events that year, and in 2003 he showed up at the Motowest Vallejo races, as we ll as some of the WCVDTS even ts. Making the front row at several 2003 races, Carriger was beginning to be recogn ized again. Tonight he prou dly carried t he checkere d flag around the track after his O pe n A victory. It was a mo ving mo ment ; Car rig er la ter me ntioned that in all the time he rode earlier in his life, winning re gularly, it was his first t ime carrying the flag. The re were also lots of new faces on hand . Many ride rs showe d up t o ride t his t rack in preparation for WCFTS races that will be held here . Th e Vet O ve r 40 line up inc luded Ric k Hoc king, Mar k Biscard i, Ro be rt McDo nnell , Brad Spencer Sr., Rod Lake and Robert Scally. Going into the first tu m , Biscardi was in front, but it didn't take Hoc king lo ng t o take the lead whe n Biscardi moved over for him. At the back I Athena Stefanou (100) and Christina Basna (613) battle it out in the brandnew Women's class at the Wachovia Arena in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
