AMA FMF/Honda of Houstan Winter Racing Series Final Round: Lake Whitney MX Park Tomac Atomic at Winter Finalel By KAT SPANN AND THE BECKSTER WHITNEY, TX, FEB. 21·22 Ame rican Suzuki/Troy Lee/Oakley/ Renthal/ MMaxima-sponsored Eli Tomac of Colorado topped the charts at Lake Whitney Motocross Park , winning the 6Scc ( 10- 11), 6Scc O pe n, es cc (7- 11) and 65cc Supermini events. More than a tho usand entered riders were on hand to combine the final round of the AMA Honda of Ho usto n/ FMF Winter Racing Series with the Lake Wh itne y season opener. With t he AMA Spring Class ic less than three weeks away, it was obvious that seat time was the sellingticket for this event , as heavy hitters from across the nation converged on central Texas. Arlingt o n's Danie l Gazel ka and Q uinlin's Parker Fleming were the onty two ride rs in the four-race series who even got close to a perfect score. Gazelka came to Whit ne y with a full count of 90 points, but a second-place finish in the 2SOcc Beginner class at the final round only netted him 115 out of 120 possible po ints . Flem ing arrived with 85 points. having won the 5 Ic c (4 -6) ev e nts at Free sto ne an d Village Cre ek and placed sec ond at Four Sta tes . His w in at Whit ney added 30 more points to his win column , and he ended the series with I 15 po ints. The onty other rider to come close to t he se two was D&S Kawa sak i/Pro C lean/T ho r/Wise co's Tar yn C ov ing ton o f Magnolia, Arkansas; she tried to hold on to her se ries sweep going into the final roun d, having won the first three, but a th ird-place overa ll in the final race awarded her with I I I po ints when all was said and done . Eli Tomac matched wits with O hio's Shawn Rife in several classes. Tomac bested the 6Scc (10- 11) and e s cc (7- 11) classes , w ith fo ur st raight mo ta wins. Tomac and Rife swapp ed moto wins in the 6Scc (7- 1 I) O pe n con test, wit h Tomac 's 2- 1 punch taking the win over Rife' s 1-2 finishes . Tomac took the win in Sunday 's 6Scc Supermini with a 1-3 score to Rife's 10-1 tally though Rife still pulled off fifth , overall. Rife ( 1-2) capt ured t he overall win in Saturday's 6Scc Supe rmini event, wit h Tomac ( 1-2) second . New Mexico's Jason Anderson nabbed the hol eshot in Saturday 's first 6Scc Supe rm ini mo to , with Rife in his wake. Rife caught the wave and passed Anderson on the first lap and held the lead to the finish. China Springs' Dylan Pe mberton gat e d seco nd, fo llowe d by Mansfield's Zeb Smith, Arizona's Cod y Thomas and Mid lan d' s Rusty Potter. Sm ith ca ught Pem be rton in the tower sweeper and moved into seco nd, but by t he n Rife was long gone. Thomas lost fourth when he went down in the bowl sweeper alongside the starting-line area . 86 By the time he remounted, the majority of the class had passed. Thomas fell again in the next tum ; it just wasn't his day. Smith miscued on lap three, and Pemberton, Eppers, Cole Martinez and Tomac all passed him. Ar izona's Mar tinez got the moto -two holeshot , with Pemberton close beh ind. Tomac too k the lead and set the pace. Rife passed Mart inez for second on the last lap, which was good enough for the overall. Smith followed in fourth , with Smith fifth.
