HOMESTEAD, FL, FEB. 8
eo ff May set a new lap record at Homestead-Miami Speedway during the Unlimit·
ed Grand Prix race at the CCS Florida seasonopening event. May ran his fastest lap during
the white-flag lap. His time of I:26.56 was the
fast est to date aro und the rec onfigured track.
He only raced tw ice, but he spectacularly started and ended the day with victories. In bot h the
GTO and Unlimited Grand Prix classes, he was
gridded midpack and had to maneuver through
traffic to take the lead - and once he go t to the
front , he continued to pick up the pace and
open up a gap on the rest of the field.
Marco Martinez nabbed the holeshot in the
Unlimited Grand Prix race and led the first few
laps, but Rick Narup took over the lead after
G
Mart inez erred and d rove int o tu rn two way
too deep. On the ne xt lap, May sw ung aro und
the o utside of Narup in tum on e and claimed
th e le ad , After that, he never loo ke d back.
Behind him, the battle (or second place was in
full force. as Darren Luck maneuvered through
traffic and into the front of the field. In the final
run for the checkered flag, May pulled a
maneuver remin iscent of his teammate Michael
Barnes: He rode his GSX-RI 000 across t he
start/finish line in a stand-up wheelie with a nod
to the spectators.
"I had to show everybody that I know how
to do a wheelie," he e xplained later; on the
podium. May commented on breaking the track
record, stating . " I think I could have gone faster,
actually. I got kind of tired silting around all day
[in between his two events]. I didn't feel as
great as I did this morning. so I'm impressed
that I was able to do that."

McCarley, wh o had been tripling a later section

Syd Wood was fifth.
O n t he se co nd go-aro und , G re g Traver

closely followed by King. After a poor showing
in his first moto, Rodney Jenson was running in

but bef ore he could a ttempt it , his goggl es
mudded up and his fron t end washed out in the
whoops. Wood ma de the pass on Blake just
before he fell, and then he pressured Jenson.
McCarley had gotten another poor start, but he
moved all the way up to fifth. Traver held on for
the mote win, but King carried the overall flag
