Back on 39 po ints in th ird was the c urrent IO-year-old National Champ ion Eric Storz, on a She rco 125. Kent Gr a ham did a grea t jo b in th e Advanced class, losing just 15 points. Runner-up Pete Croft dr opped 24 on his Mont es a. C live Hannon was third with a total of 29 points. The lo ne Pro-class rider, Ken ny Strob , lost 30 points on a to ughe r co urse, but he had no competition; it would have been interesting to see how he w oul d 've fin ished ag a ins t th e Expe rts , had the tw o classes ridde n the same course - whic h migh t ma ke sense in futu re contests. STTARS SUPErmoto Winter Ser ies Round 3: Grange Motor Speedway Trachy Puts Call on Hold By JAMEY BLUNT APPLE VAWY, CA, FEB, 22 D espite what was best decribed as a "de luge: round three of the STTARS Supermoto Winter Ser ies at Grange Motor Speedway in Apple Valiey, California, was a "go ." You see, su perrnoto r uns com e rain o r shine , according to moto guru Do n C ane t . Upon pulli ng though t he gates to Grange , it wa s ap paren t the track had superb design , as the water runoff was excellent . By the completion of pract ice, the 100 ent rants on hand saw the rain gods back off the water throttle and de liver a dry track. This in tum sent race rs back to the already ove rworked Moto Connection crew to have tires changed back to dry setups. By I:30 p.rn., the heats had been complete d without incident, and 2 p.rn. wo uld see th e first of eight main eve nts. By virtu e of his heat-r ace victory, Motostrano.com/Cytomax's Cory Call sat on po le for the start of the 450cc main. Call was tied in po ints for th e series le ad with Ha hm Motosports/Troy Lee Des ign's Gary Trachy. O n the start, Trachy got the jump and immediately took Call's line away as they entered tu m one. Call ran second , with Justin Ross th ird , Kawasa ki's Brandon Cu rrie fourth , Maxxis' Greg Trachy fifth, and number-one plate holder Mark Cernicky sixth. Call was glued to Gary 's back fe nde r. Cernicky went do wn as t he y entered the dirt section. By lap two, the leaders had a 3.7-second gap over th ird, and Greg had gotten by Currie and w as go ing after Ross. On t he t hird lap. Trachy displaced Ross for third. and Dunlop's Cemicky, who re -joined the race in ninth . put his head down and start ed to move forward. Gary and Call wer e ve ry evenly matched, and th e start determ ined t he outcome. At the checke red nag, it was Gary, Call, Greg , Ross and Cernicky. The 2S0c c class is heating up, e specially with the factory Kawasaki presence . Del Arno Motorsports/FMF's Pablo Veglia is the thorn in Kawasaki 's s ide . Ho w ev e r. Veglia and Kawasaki's Jeff Mat iasevich both went down in the heat race, giving them lesse r starting positlons for the main. The heat-race winner, Currie Enterpri ses' Currie, prevailed , despite pressure allthe way from Veglia. C all had on e more shot at Gary in t he O pe n Expe rt ma in. It was 46 degre es and driuling when Can et threw the nag. Gary shot into the lead, followed by Varner Motosports' juan Benavidez and Call. Gary was starting to get away, wh ile Call tried to find a way around Benavidez. On lap four, Call finally got by for second and we nt after Gary. By lap six, Call had caught up to Gary, but he couldn't find a way aro und . Meanwh ile, Moto Connections' Chuck McCarty w as qu iet ly moving up th rough the pack, eventually finishing fou rt h, ahead of Cernicky. Call's final atte mpt to get past Gary came exiting turn 16 and head ing to the checkers , whe re he lite rally re ached out and pulled himself past Gary. FEB, B strong e ffort turned t he new Aust in-De l Motocross Park into an exce llent race course o n Sunday, despite three da ys of rain. With no pract ice o n Saturday due to t rac k work, an ext ra hour was adde d Sunday. The more than I30 riders who braved the cold got a big jump in t he six-rac e Simpson Spons o rship Se ries. Kal p Clark got a brea k when Cod y Smith e had pro blem s in the first SOcc Junior more and dro pped to last. Smith came back to dust the field in mo to two and claim fifth overall , while Clark topped the rest of th e fie ld for second in the moto and first overall. Chris Johnson too k second by chasing Clark home in bot h mot es, and Christ ian Bosada fo llowe d him tw ice for third. Michae l Perry dom inated th e 80cc Se nior and 8Scc O pe n classes, w ith Lind say Mye rs placing second in both classes. Michael Webe r was t hird in t he 80cc Sen ior con test . Cla rk made Myers work har der in th e e scc Ope n eve nt by taking se co nd in t he first moto , but Mye rs too k it in the se cond mo to for second ove rall. A ~a1le Gary lrochy (357) and Cory Call (62) were this close all doy at round three of the STTARS Supermoto Winter Series. Myers got he r first-p lace t ro phy in t he Wome n's Non-Pre class, winning both motos in fro nt of se rie s le a de r Kayl e y Bailey, w h o cras hed her Yamaha in the 12Scc Novice race and rode a borro wed Kawasaki care fully to a pair of seconds. In the 12Scc Novice class, Sean Morgen sen took two moto wi ns against a pretty stro ng field, with Mat t Mye rs placing second with a fourth and a second. Logan Smith had a seco nd and a fo urt h . leaving him t hird for t he day. Behind them , Dre w Mitschke got third in the first moto and fifth in the se cond fo r fourt h overall, and the co nsisten t jo rdan Kruse 's pair of sixes put him fifth. Th e two la rge st classe s o f t he da y we re young-rider classes : The 125cc Beginner class had 13 rid e rs , led wi re to w ire by Marcus Russe ll, and the 60cc Senior class had 10 riders, led by C ody Briggs. Clark (3-2) was runn e r-up in t he 60cc Se nior clash, ahead of Bos ada (2-3), Robert Adcoc k and Kody Hanse.
