D eAtleys D evour Salem I By CLAY LIGHT SALEM, OR, FE8. 13 dahoans Sam and Matt DeAtley de voured the competition at t he ninth round of the CMC Northwest Winter Arena cross Ser ies, held at Forster Livestock Pavilion. Older brother Sam contested four classes on t he day and at the comp leti on wa s unbeaten in a ll four - th e I25cc, 25Occ, Before The Hill and Four-Stroke Int e rme diat e classes. Matt wasn't far off his bro ther's pace, with wins in the 85cc ( 12- 13) and Superm ini classes. Matt, riding the Mac's Cycles Suzuki RM , led every lap of both Supermini mot os and scored his first of tw o overa ll wins of the night. Dougie Crockett was Mat t' s closes t competitio n, al though the O regonia n co uld n't ma inta in Matt's pace for ve ry long and could only watch as Ma tt sp ed on to dua l mo to v ict o ries . Crockett (2-2) finished seco nd ove rall, followed by local ride r Charlie McCarthy. Matt also shined in the 8Scc (12-13 ) class. Th e ride r fro m Lewist on landed another I- I blow to th e competiti on to re main unbeaten on the evening. Sam's first overall win came in the combined Before The Hill jun ior / Inte rmediate contest. Sa m grabbed th e le a d at th e start o f th e opening moto and retained the position to the finish. His closest co mpe tition came from local Honda rider Erik Meusling, who 's been tearing up the junior ranks recently, and this day was much the same for the IS-ye a r -o ld from Hubbard. Meusling followed Sam all the way to the fin is h , wh ile Travis McMackin , Kevin Pet rushkin and Wash ington's Richie Ferzacca filled out the top five. In moto two, Sam again nabbed the lead , followed by the only other Interme diate rider in t he field of 14, Anthony Keel. However, Keel began a gradua l descent throug h the pack, while Meusling moved up to join Sam up front. Sam, however, woul d not be denied the win, pos t ing an overall Inter med iate -class wi n. Meus ling aced bot h ju nior motos , tra iled by McMackin (2-2), Petrushkin (3-3), Ferzacca (4-5) and Ryan Holland (6-4) . I McMackin's Salem appearances this winter have been infreque nt, but they have also been successfu l, and that was the case this night in the 12Scc Junior class. McMackin and Meusling traded moto w ins , but McMackin's strong moto-tw o showing ear ned t he former minicycle speedster the overall win . Meusling finished seco nd overall , but it was the lon e Interm ediate rider, Sam DeAtley, who collected the checkered flag firs t in bo t h contests . Yamaha rider jeremiah Sparks , a relati ve newcom er to the junior ranks, rounded out the top three in the junior class with 4-3 pladngs . "Mad Max" Harris has been on a roll lately, and things went his way in two 50cc classes. Vanco uve r, Wash ington's Harris waste d the co mpet ition in t he SOcc (7-8) class , win ning both motos. His fellow Cobra pilot jo nath an Andrew has also notched many victories in the class this season, but as in the 50cc (7-8) class, Andrew wou ld also take the back seat to Harr is in the 50cc Open class.
