Although age supposed ly mellows racers, th e motos with Honda pilots Schacht , Bro wn and McMurry featured as much intens ity as any class on th is day. The three diced at the fr o nt of ea ch O ver 30 and O ve r 40 Expert moto, and never did any one of them lose contact with the other tw o. Th us the Over 30 Expert dass was anyone 's r ace w he n Sc ha ch t , Bro w n a nd Mc Mur r y q uickly fou nd the front in each mo to . "All year lo ng, we ' ve bee n clos e ," sai d Scha cht. " I've be e n raci ng for 26 years, an d the se have been so me of t he bes t yea rs I've had. We give each ot her a lot of respect on the track. We can cro wd each other, but we wo n't take each ot her o ut. We can scrap hard but still get up Mond ay mo rning and go to work. " And scrap they did, as Schacht fought off his friend ly rivals to sco re the overall win. Brown. w ho is presi den t of the Reno O ld-Timers MX Assoc iat ion, claimed a close seco nd . "It was epic!" said Brown of the battle in the second mota. "I was totally squirrelly that last moto . I kep t going off t he trac k, and then I'd have to catch back up. But it was fun, and that's w hat we' re all here fo r. Th ey [Sch acht and McMurry) are both riding really good ." McMurry polite ly decl ined to comment after the secon d moto, apparently pre ferring not to share any thoughts on his excrucia tingly close third-place finish. McMurry has taken his share of wins throughout the year, though, and if not for a scan t few feet in each mo to , he'd have ano the r o ne to add to his resume. Bro w n sa id he was ready for a new diversion now t hat t he motocross season in northern Nevada is done . Mciver Devises a Winner By JIM AND FARRIHN ENOS RANCHO CORDOVA , CA, NOV. 23Travis Mciver turned a pair of moto wins in the 250cc Novice class into an overallvicto ry at rou nd four of the AMP O cto berfest Super Gold Cup Series at the AMP Nation al Track at Prairie City. The effort also put the Ho nda rider into the points lead, as class do minator Ryan Haze n suffered a bad first -moto crash that put him out of actio n for the rest of the day. Mciver got a thir d-place start among the 10rider field. Kawasaki jockey Miguel Rangel too k the early lead. Hazen was in tow until he went down at the bottom of a fast downhill and went ove r the back side of a berm. Chad Crawford inhe rited sec o nd spot and ke pt Mciver at bay for th e first two laps, wh ile Range l bega n to stre tch out his lead. However, as Mciver came arou nd and saw Hazen stilloff to the side of the track , he kicked it up a notc h and quickly got by Crawford and then se t his sights on Rangel. The fact that Haze n is Mciver's cousin may have given him that extra kick to win the mot o; in any case , he soon caugh t up to Rangel, and he made th e pa ss o n t he wh ite -flag lap. Moto two again saw Range l out fro nt , but this time Mcive r was right on his rear fender, and he made a pass for the lead two turns into the mo to. From there on , Mciver increased his lead, while Rangel quickly came under pressure from Steckly. Craw ford joined the duo , and a good three- rider battle e nsued for se co nd . Mciver too k ano the r unco ntested w in. Rangel manage d to hold off Steckl y fo r the runner-up spot on th e day. Ste ckly ro und ed out the top three with a 4-3 score. In 250cc Interm ed iate action, Tony She rman bested a strong 16-rider field en rou te to a pair of moto wins . Sherman utilized a pair of good starts and , despite heavy pressure from local rider A.J. Perez, came across the finish line with a com fortab le lead both t imes out. Dave Mumma e arned t he seco nd sp ot o n th e day via a 6-2 e ffort , w hile Be au Wiegand ro unded o ut the top three with a 4-S tally. Bobby Garrison made the trek from Sparks, Neva da , worthwhile by acing both 2S0cc Pro mot o s . McCru mme n had a little trou ble o n the day, going down in the first mote and finishing third, but he re bound ed in mote two for second and sec o nd overa ll on the day.
