Ca liforn ia slight overcast quelled the competitors' fea rs of dea li ng wi th the brut ally hot A ugust days of Southern Ca lifornia , At the start of moto one, Yama ha-mounted Bac k er nab bed t he ho lesh ot going in to the fir st co rner of th e cha lleng ing 1.6 ·mile co urse . Close behind were Yam aha riders Denni s Car lo ck and Tom Ba rnett. Backer soon established a fo u r- to five -se con d lead over hi s co mpetition, wh ile Carlock and Barnett dueled for seco nd place, By lap th ree, Carlock had o pene d up a sli g ht lea d ove r Barnett . With B ack er stormi ng the c o rn ers with a strong lead. Ba rnett took one last sho t at overtaking Carlock for th e runner -up position. Despi te his full-throttle eff o rt , Ba rn ett had to se ttle for th ir d , as Carlock took seco nd -p lace ho nors behind the do mi nant B ack er. Backer showed that the first moto was no fluke by roc k eting his Yamaha to th e fro nt at the start of m ota two, By th e end of lap two. h e' d buil t a large lead over the rest of the pack . B ehind h im , th e du el fo r second was betw een Barn ett and Husqvama jockey Keith Sievers. As Back er put in another fla wless ride to take an unc ontested overall victory, Bamett and Sievers staged a tight battle fo r th e runner -up spo t. Sievers put in a grea t effort, dosing in o n B arn ett with every la p , but at the chec kere d fl ag it was Barn ett clinging to secon d, with Sievers a dose third. O ne of th e fastest cl asses of the day was th e GP Tw o Expert d ivision , At th e st a rt of m oto one, it was Mak o -mounted E d Stovin vs. Su zuk i rider Rob Noli n . Stov in held on t o a narrow lead fo r th e first tw o laps. Entering lap th ree, No li n fo und a li ne aroun d Stovin in the ba ck pa rt of t he tr ack , Th e hi gh · fly ing Noli n easily clea red th e numerou s ta ble to p jumps, with Stovin so me eight seconds behind . At th e fini sh, Nolin held on to fir st , with Stavin in sec ond and Suzuki j ock ey Ed T ashjia n in third , St ovin us ed th e legenda ry power of his Maico t o m ou nt a lar g e lead at the start of m ot a two. In second was T ashjian, followed by Nolin in third , Un fortunately , a br ief stall at the end of la p t wo r eleg at ed Tashjia n to fou rth plac e. In th ird was CZ ride r Dave Ben ne tt, wh o battled hard to stay ahead of the chargi ng T ashj ian, At th e finish, Stovin held off the rapidl y closing No lin for first place and th e overall victory. Sheak, though , wasn 't as fortunate , fin ishing fi fth , Mancuso' s 3 -2 pla cings netted th e sec o nd ye ar Pro second over a ll, trailed by Sheak (2 · 5) , Vielle ( 5 · 3) and Bi scegli a (4 ·6). In the adjoined 125cc B cl ass, Daniel Hamilton and Washington 's Ross Johnson sp lit moto wins , but it wa s loc al Hond a rid er Ham il t on who nett ed an ov erall win , Ross ( 1· 2) , Todd Net son (3 · 3) , Eric T urne r (4·4 ) and Ross M iller ( 5 -5) filled ou t th e top fiv e overall. Huffman posted the overall 125c c and 250cc Pro -cla ss wins, while th e Kawasaki jockey from Corona , Sheak, scored a win in the Over 25 Pro cla ss after trailing Hu ffm an and J oey Mancuso in the 250cc Pro class , Sh eak , who is on an extended vacation in Was h ing to n St at e , j umped out fron t in the day' s opening m ota, th e combined Over 25 Prc /B contes t, and rem ain ed th ere to the fi nish. Without h is usual bar -t o -bar confrontat ion w ith his frien d ly rival Hu ffm an , Sheak wo n easily , Hond a CRF450R· mounted Ron Begeot was th e rider wh o stuc k cl osest to Sheak , fin ishing seco nd .
