Any ti m e a new race ven ue debuts , th ere ar e sev eral un kn owns to deal wi th . The pro m oters hav e a different faci li t y to work wit h , different government officials to appease, and a new fan bas e to attract. The riders are com pl ete ly in the d ar k : they com e in to a new arena with no idea wha t ty pe of soil the tr ack co nsists of, let alo ne the ac tual layo ut. Furth ermore, going into a new region undoubted ly means new competition in all classes. It could all be c onsidered stressful. but racers thrive on th at kind of stuff. Rider and fan turno ut was very healthy, espec ially co nside ring th at th e race was being held here for the firs t ti me. Th o se who ca me were tre ated to a fu ll day an d nigh t of racin g o n an innovat ive tr ack . Th e em phasi s of th e eve ni ng ' s prog ra m was o n the Pr o classes. Th at wa s fo r good reason. For regular foll ow ers of the seri es, what happen ed was no sur pr ise, bec ause it' s been happening all summ er lon g . For th e new Bay Area fans. th ough . th e ev ents th at unfolded and th e domina nce di splay ed by one rid er wer e an eye o pe ner, to say th e least . Th e pr o m ot ers threw a new tw ist into th e rac e pr og ram by putt ing th e 125cc and 25 0cc Interm ediat es on the sam e gate as the co rresponding Pro cl asses. Th is had tw o effects : It m ade fo r a lot m or e traffi c , and it gave everyone watch ing a gre at oppo rt un ity to gauge th e speed of th e fa stest A m ate urs in North ern Californ ia. O ne ri der w ho made a huge im pressio n was American Suzuk i' s Casey Hinson . Fres h off of a top -10 125cc fin ish at Lor etta Ly nn's. Hinson 's speed w as r em ark ab l e. He easily wo n the Int erm ediate cla ss and looked rig ht at home wi th the Pros. He m ay not have bee n racing for m oney , bu t the ex perience of bei ng out there w it h such seasoned veterans was very va luable . K y le Gr if fit h made another strong Bounty Hun ter showing, fin ishing second in the class, behi nd Hinson. The 250cc Intermed iates fo llo wed the same prog ram , gating with the Pr o class . Things were even more cro wd ed. Wes ton Arthurs won the class by finis hing seco nd both times out. No one else wa s able to stay near th e fro nt as co nsis tently as Arthu rs . A fter fin ishi ng thi rd on the 125. Matthew Will iams rod e his Yamaha to 1-5 m ota finis hes in th e 250 s fo r seco nd ove ral l. Nick Mar kert was th ird with 4-3 scores. Hin son also rode a 250, bu t his h op es of w innin g th e overall were dashed when he went down in the first mota. He ca me back stro ng in th e seco nd stanza , winning his final outing of th e nigh t by a w ide margin. Once again , the firs t 250cc Pro event was li k e a crystal ba ll fo r th o se w ho wa n te d to k now wha t was go ing to happen in the m ain . Ru sty Ho ll an d attacke d t he c o u rs e w ith a vengean ce a nd se pa ra ted himself from the com petitio n. Jeff W illoh was looking solid and cons ist ent on his Suzu ki: he went 2-2 for sec ond, ahead of J eff Pestana. who fi nis hed fift h and fourth, respectively , in th e two m ot os. A s the top main-even t qualifier, Holland took hi s lonel y p lac e in th e rear for the single fil e start . He had a lot of solid rid ers in front of him. but the tight track suited him and his are- na cross rid in g style. A uggie Rodriguez , wh o wa s th e closest thi ng to a loc al fav orite, took co ntro l earl y on and looked q uite co m fo rtable o ut fr ont. Ho ll and focused on getting to the fron t , and he wo rk ed q u ickl y, passing th ree riders in th e fir st turn and fi ve by the end of the ope ning lap.
