Southern Enduro Riders Association Kids Series R nd 7: Breezy Hill Kids Enduro Jones Winds Up Winning Breezy Hill B y CARO LYN Little Okie Raceway: Tyler Wymore made an imp ression in the 65cc ranks at ro und three of the CMA Friday Night MX Ser ies in Made ra, California, by sweeping both 65cc ( 9-11) Begin ner moto s. CMA Friday Night MX Series Round 3: Little Dkie Raceway A Little Racing Amongst Friends beca use those g uys al ways stage a w ild drama , It' s wh at you m igh t get if yo u threw th e Indianapo lis 500 and a crash -up de rby into a blender. Jed Strong won th e first m c to . fol lowed by Jordan Wi tr ado and Nacona Harlow. Richard M acias won the second mota, but a fift h -p lac e fi n ish in the firs t one cost hi m a shot at the overall. Ha rlow finished second , whil e Stro ng was th ird . Strong took th e overa ll wi th 1-3 finishes. Har low 's 3 -2 t all y got h im seco nd , whil e Macias was th ird . W itrado and Jam es Reyes ro unded out the top five. Th e 125cc Novices hav e th e same propen sity for close raci ng , althoug h th ey seemed to keep it o n two wheels a litt le m ore co ns iste nt Iy . Ma de ra' s own Kevin Wells wen t 5 -4 fo r a solid top -fiv e finish . All good th ings must come to an end , and round three fina lly d id . Like all of the pr evious races , everyone left with smiles on th eir fac es. A lot of trophies were passed out to a lot of excited young racers . The weather was a plu s. bu t no o ne expected it to last long . Another heat wave was inevi table, but then again, so was rou nd fou r of the seri es. Th is summer stuff might not be so bad after all. It's quite co m mon t o see 500 entri es at a loc al race, and even m o re if it' s a really pr estig iou s se ries . A ll of tha t pop u la ri t y g iv es even ts a feel in g of importa nc e and d rives rid ers t o excel. From the 50cc cl asses on up to t he Pros, Californians t ak e th eir r acin g se rio us ly . Everyo ne ha s som ething to p ro ve. Racers are co m pe tit ive by nat ure, and they thrive on th e pr essur e of a big race, but some ti m es it's go od j us t t o go o u t and rid e w ith your bud di es. Th at' s wh at the CMA's Friday Ni ght MX Series is all abo ut. It' s low-k ey , the tr ack is fu n, and eve ryone is in a good m oo d . Th ere are no prot ests. "M ini Dads" are n't box ing at th e fin ish li ne. It' s a good vibe . Th e weat her go ds gr ant ed Cen Cal a brie f repri eve fro m th e oppress ive summer heat for th e week end of round thr ee. Te m ps dropped into th e 90s for the first ti me in weeks. A gen tle breeze ble w fro m the west, and it was like an enti re geographic regi on breathed a collec ti ve sig h of reli ef. A couple hund red people li ned the fences as the racing got under way . The 65cc (7 -8 ) riders put o n a good show. Th ere was a lot of close racing , and all of the rid er s were involved in position chang es o n th e tr ac k . T erry C hea tha m defeate d Zek e Stron g in th e fi rst m ota . No t far behind th em were Mich ael Way brigh t , Jake Baer and J ustin J on es. Strong came out in th e fina l race and lived up to his la st nam e, ho ld ing off Jo nes, who had things going much better th an he had in th e fi rs t rac e. Chea tha m fi ni shed th ir d , fol lowed by Waybrigh t and Ba er. A quic k exercise in m ot o cro s s m ath dete r mi ned th at St r on g wo n th e o ve ra ll wi th his 2 - 1 perf or m an ces, Cheatham ' s 1-3 tally garn ered sec o nd, and Jones was th ird with a 5 -2 sho wi ng . Th ere weren 't a to n of 65cc No vice riders in th e ho use, but th e ones who did sho w m ade a go of it. Landon Sullivan and Zach ary Sum m ers dueled in fro n t of Trav is Burrou g h a ll night long . T he t wo KTM rid ers trad ed m ot o win s and seco nd -p lace fini shes. Sullivan wo n th e fi nal m ota and , along with it, the overa ll. Summer s c a me back a nd fi nished second, ahead of Sullivan, in th e X clas s. A gang of yo ung SERA and TSCEC Enduro ri de rs wer e set up and ready for one tough and bli stering rac e. Due to its extremely dust y and dan gerou s trails, th e Breezy Hill E n d u r o is prob ably th e m ost dr ead ed episode in t he SERA Series. Slam some August heat in th e middle of a Lo uisia na forest, and you ha ve a sco rc hing kid s' race! The forest o f pine trees was in m ajor need of rain sho wers to hold d ow n th e du st , wh ic h engulfed eve ryth ing , while th e swe lte ring sun m ade for one hot and humid d irt -bike event. Des pite th e climate , Saturd ay m orning saw 35 kids all geared up . Sm all 50cc riders practiced o n the trails , wh il e th e older riders pr epar ed th em selv es fo r battles with conte nde rs, bu d dies an d ne w faces fro m t he T SC EC K id s Series. Ki ds lin ed up at 4 o'clock , Spencer Cook led the Vet Ki ds class down the sandy tr ail s. T wo laps of a du sty 7 -mi le loop w it nessed some int ense competi tion bet ween Cook and fe llo w Kaw asak i j o ck ey Justi n O 'Quin n . Cook's speed wra pped up first pl ac e, w hile O 'Quinn hooked him self up with a good- looking sec ond- place win I Nex t, th e K ids Int ermedi ate cl ass took off be hind th e Vet K ids, add ing fu rt her dust and ride rs t o th e sa me tra il. Th ese yo ung riders may be small, but some of the m even had th e co urage to get up th e next m orn - ing and rac e the adult s' enduro , in o rder to pr epare fo r so me to ugh co m pe t it io n in th e J unio rs cla ss next year . Wh ile the o lder k ids rac ed th ei r lap s, th e younger 50 cc rid ers were busy getting in line and getting focused. Th eir laps were short, but 1u-mch ti res and dus ty eart h som eti m es m ak e fo r so m e wo bb ling and c rashi ng and some hard -t o-manaqe trai ls. Neve rthe less , these two cl asses lac ked non e of devotion, zeal and fer vor of th ei r old er co un terpa rts ! Starting off th e B eg inner Pee Wee cl ass was 6 -year-old Yam ah a rid er Brenn en Reed , wh o showe d no leniency to the others o n th e tr ail. Yo ung Reed la p ped every rider o n his PW50, dem on str atin g techniques of passi ng at an outstandi ng spee d. Reed is only one ra ce away fro m wrappin g up his end -o f- the-year o ve r a ll cla ss w in , and he look s fo rwa rd to m oving up t o th e bigg er class es. Grabbing second wa s 6 -y ear-old Ka wasaki jockey Cod y Fr anklin, who d id an awesome job of figh ting those dust y trails , leaving third for little Cajun spee dste r Kyl e La fle ur, on his Yamaha. On c e th e Beginner Pee Wees were off th e tra ils, some serious 50cc racing lay ahea d for spectators. The Pee Wee class t ook off on the fi rst of th eir si x lap s, w ith J on es fi rst on th e t rai l. Ro ger s, t he 2 002 B eg inn er Pee W ee Cha m pi o n, found him self in the ce ntral point of a maj or three - way b raw l for fir st among him self, J o nes and Rowl and. Th e t wo KT M spe ed dem ons hav e been taking turns all year in the p rimary spo t in this class, but with j ust a handful of races left, it was ti m e for a leade r to be clearl y est ablished . Jon es' lap times fo r th e fir st th ree laps were j ust too fa st! Rari ng and ready t o catch up wi th J ones, Row lan d had Roge rs right o n his back , rid ing w ith enormous sk ill in th e dirt and d ust. A bsolutely zero m ist ak es wer e perm itt ed for Bey ear -old J on es. With only a single seco nd separating th e three young ste r s, Jones tu rn ed in th e fa st es t lap t im es, p uttin g a m ere t wo seconds between himself and Rowla nd , wh o wrapped up third, whil e Rog ers sto le seco nd place fr om Row land by a hei r 's bread th and o nly one second on the clock .
