After working methodically to positi on himself near the front of the pack . Leivan eventually sliced his way through woods and int o the lead. and he rode alone out front for th e last half o f the race . "I actually had a decent j u m p . but I got pushed out into th e bushes and had to start from the back," Leivan explained. "I bic ycl ed the co urse on Saturda y an d found some good lines, so I used th em to work my way to the front. On ce I got int o the lead . I tried to keep a good pace and use the ti ght and tec h n ic al secti ons to my advantage." By the end of the five- lap , two-ho ur event, Leivan had built his lead to a m inute and 36 seconds en route to hi s sixth victory of the 2003 ca m paign. Aft er leading the firs t two laps, Dou g Stone c o n t i n u ed to rid e hard o n his D onn e ll ' s/ Sto newo rks Suspe nsion/ Sc ot t -ba ck ed CR250 to claim run ner -up , despite bei ng off the bike for nearl y a month . Havin g rec eiv ed no p recipita tion fo r th e las t tw o m onths, the O ld Son Racing co urse was dry . Loose roc k s. off-ca m ber hills, creek beds . and grasstrack section s m a de up the 9.3-mile co urse. Althoug h du st was an issue . conditions wer e not nearl y as severe as at th e pr ev ious round. and it wa s po ssible to have some wh eel -to -wh eel racing. The event was spo nso re d by Don nell' s Hon da /Suzuki , and t he K an sa s C it y area sho p pr o v ided man y giveaways . as well as the entire AA purse. St one d id h is normal thi ng : a bs con d ing with the holeshot and attempting to run away . Th iele fin all y got off to a good start and tried to keep pace, while Leivan entered the sin gl etrack in sevent h. Within three miles. Leivan had his WR250F all the way up to second and was inch ing cl oser to the lead. Stone had five sec onds on Leivan after th e fi rs t 26 -m inute l ap , w hile Thiel e was an oth er 30 second s back . Chris Ne sbitt held fourth on his Team Green /Moo se/R enth al-ba ck ed KX250. Caleb Wohletz was fifth. T he gap between St on e a nd Leivan was down to a single secon d af te r lap two . and Lei van wes looking fo r his chan ce to take the lead . That o pportunity came j ust a few m inutes into the th ird lap when An swer / Du nl op / Pro Clea n/Factory Effex/S ix Six One-supported Leiv an used one of his alternate li nes to move ahead an d ge t h is firs t ta ste of cl ean , dust -free a ir.
