contest when he again faced off against Jared Minor, who was runner-up. Minor, who did so well the previous week, could only back up his Schoolboy performance with a third in the 250cc B class. O'Connor also found his way into the winners' circle again, this time in the Four-Stroke A class, on his John Burr Cycles Honda. Other A~c1ass winners included Gerrit Ordelman, in the 125cc A class, and veteran Ty Davis, riding for Montclair Yamaha in both the Junior Vet A and Vet A classes. It was double-win weekend for several other riders as well. Honda rider Robert Memoli had a perfect four-for-four weekend, winning the 85cc (14-16) class going away and the Supermini contest after challenges from Trent Pugmire, who did not get shut out, as he won the 85cc (12-13) class. JBC Cobramounted Michael Arana topped the Pee Wee (7 -8) Stock and Modified classes, and Mike Victorian bested the Pee Wee (4-6) Stock and Modified classes on a WC Cobra. District 14 Dirt Track Boulis Racing Fowlerville Fair Half Mile Fowlerville Fairgrounds Scodart Darts to Dirt Track Win By BART NEWMAN FOWLERVILLE, M1, JULY 19 Boulis Racing brought the AMA District 14 Dirt Track "rolling thunder show" to the Fowlerville fairgrounds for another high-speed, dirt-flinging event. Looking at the riders signed up in the Combo class, it was easy to tell that this was going to be a race to watch. Scot Scodart electrified the crowd by holding off a hard-charging Nichole Cheza all night long to take the win and the lion's share of the purse of more than $1000 put up by the good folks at American Harley-Davidson in Ann Arbor, Brighton Harley-Davidson, C&C Sports (also in Brighton). and Ray C's in Lapeer, Michigan. Scodart and Cheza won their respective heat races, putting them in the front row for the night's main event. Andy Springsteen, Daniel McKim and William Stevens also ran strong in the heats, which put them shoulder to shoulder with the two favorites. When the green light flashed, McKim got the jump on the outside pole to lead the field into tum one. The pack took advantage of McKim's outside position and had him up on the hay bales before he could close the door on them, which let Scodart, Cheza, Stevens and Springsteen by, and Scodart led the pack down the back straight. Scodart began to sandblast the front of Cheza's Planet Honda/MCR Suspensionbacked CRF450R Honda as she tried to fight through the roost to take the lead. Stevens was solid in third, looking for traction or a groove that would help him close the gap on the leaders, A battle over fourth was raging, as Springsteen, Brandon Laursen, Brian Vincent and Bryan Villella all had the hammer down, playing catch-up. Out front, Scodart was laying down one great lap after another, fending off Cheza's every attack. By the halfway point, Scodart held a two-bikelength lead over Cheza, while Stevens now had his hands full with Villella. The wily veteran used experience and race savvy to make his way into third with a great move in turns three and four. With the laps winding down fast, Cheza pulled out all the stops and went at Scodart unmercifully - to no avail. Scodart had her covered and rode in for a three-bikelength win at the checkered flag. "I learned her [Cheza's] lines early on and adjusted mine to hers," Scodart explained afterward. "I had a little more motor, thanks to my family, Jim Bauerle Racing, First Class Glass, Kevin's Trucking and C&C Sports, plus there was 25 high school buddies in the stands that would never let me live it down if Nicole beat me." Cheza finished a very dirty second after riding in Scodart's roost all night long. Third went to back-row starter Villella, who spotted half the field 10 feet after a less-than-stellar heat race, as this elder statesman didn't care about the deep track or its rougher-than-normal condition: he just wanted to win. Stevens grabbed fourth in the Combo class, which was a nice addition to the first he took in the 250cc class along the way. This friendly kid has the speed and desire to run with the top guys, and with a little more saddle time, he'll be up there, knocking on their door. Fifth went to Laursen, who rode a quiet race that garnered a solid top-five finish. The balance of the top 10, respectively, were Vincent, Nile Hanchett, Stephanie Welch (who is easily the secondfastest woman dirt tracker in Michigan), holeshot man McKim, and hard-luck kid Springsteen, who also ran out front early before a mechanical gremlin ended his night. Michael Johnson had both the 85cc and 65cc Mini classes covered as the Mount Morris, Michigan, rider ran to wins in both classes. In the 65cc class, Johnson was shifting gears and looking for the checkered flag as soon as the green light flashed. Andrew Johnson. following in his big brother's footsteps, rode home in the runner-up position after outdueling Kameran Miller, who placed a solid third. Anthony Link piloted his Kawasaki to a fourthplace finish, holding off a charge from James Chapin, who rounded out the top five. The 85cc class was another Michael Johnson runaway, as he turned a great start into a big win. Chaz Springsteen was in the runnerup spot all night long and looked good, but he was not on Michael's pace. Yamaha rider Robert Boulis was on the podium in third. Heather Kelsey and Brandon O'Kelly filled the last two spots in the top five. CMRA Championship Endurance Series Round 5: Hallett Motor Racing Circuit Village Idiots Endure the Heat Prussiano. Four laps later, Ball made the pass on Prussiano in the Bus Stop turn, putting North Texas Yamaha in the lead. Northwest Honda, Desert-Rats.net and Short Bus Racing rounded out the top six. "I caught a false neutral in Bus Stop and ran wide, and he went around me," said Prussiano after the first pit stop. "The bike was overheating when I was shifting at red line, so I started short-shifting at around 10 grand, and that got the temp down to about 245.Prussiano's false neutral was just a hint of the problems yet to come for Vinyl Edge Racing. Desert-Rats.net also made a move up the order, passing Northwest Honda for fourth, while Village Idiots Racing was circulating in a solitary third. During the third hour, Northwest Honda's Gordon Miller went down in turn two, grinding a hole in the fuel tank. The team lost valuable time in the pits replacing the tank and doing some body work before returning to the track. At that point, Michael Sanchez had taken over the Vinyl Edge Racing controls from Jody Hudson and had reeled in Kevin Mays of North Texas Yamaha to put Vinyl Edge back on top. A few laps later, an aggressive Chris Headley moved Village Idiots Racing into second. ahead of North Texas Yamaha. In the fourth hour, Prussiano got back in the saddle for Vinyl Edge, and Montgomery took over for Village Idiots. Northwest Honda went down for the second time, this time in turn three with Matt Maschmann on board, as most of the riders were starting to feel the effects of the extreme heat. In the final hour, Headley took his final turn for Village Idiots, passing Alan Tan of Vinyl Edge for the lead. Shortly after, Tan pulled into the pits with fourth gear gone from the tranny. Hudson and Prussiano finished out the race for Vinyl Edge in an attempt to salvage as many championship points as possible. "I tried riding it in fourth, but it kept bouncing into fifth," said Vinyl Edge's Hudson, "50 I By SHAN MOORE HALLETT, OK, JULY 19 Team Village Idiots Racing took their second overall win in a row by claiming a come· frombehind victory over North Texas Yamaha and series leaders Vinyl Edge Racing at round five of the CMRA Championship Endurance Series, held at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit in northeastem Oklahoma. Although the winning margin was two laps, the win did not come easily for "the Idiots," as, going into the final 30 minutes, the race was still very much up for grabs. Thirty-four teams filled the grid for what would be the third six-hour event of the series. A lower-than-usual number of entries for the event was attributed to the fact that 108degree weather had been forecast for the area - something for which Oklahoma is well known in July. Houston's Joe Prussiano put the Vinyl Edge Racing CBR954 into the lead at the drop of the flag, with Northwest Honda's Matt Maschmann, on a Honda 954RR, in second, and Craig Montgomery, on the Village Idiots Racing Yamaha R6, in third. Montgomery took two laps to get into the groove, and then he put Village Idiots Racing into second, ahead of Northwest Honda. North Texas Yamaha Racing's Shannon Ball, on a Yamaha R6, also jumped into the fray, bumping Northwest Honda back one spot more. The tight and demanding course, plus the fact that there is not a significantly long straight, allows the smaller 600s to compete with the bigger bikes at Hallett, and both the Village Idiots and North Texas Yamaha teams were determined to take the win in the Oklahoma heat. Meanwhile, Short Bus Racing, on a Yamaha R6, and Desert-Rats.net, on a GSX-R750, were locked in a seesaw battle over fifth. On lap five, Ball passed Montgomery for second and set out after the short-shifting cue I e n e _ s AUGUST 20, 2003 63
