Also repeating was Scott Saunders, riding Hollister's machine in the Over 40 final. He grabbed the lead from one of the "hardest passes" in the Timonium series, Bob Babcock. Dave Smith, John Henderson and Joe Dohm followed. Proving that power is not everything on this smallish one-eighth-mile oval, Mark Stambaugh started picking off riders on his XR200-based machine. By halfway. he was into third, and he kept pounding on Babcock high and low, to no avail. Jonathan Jordan took the 250cc B lead from Richard Heverly, Ryan Henderson and Henry Mangers in his quest to repeat as class winner. Henderson drifted back while the front three pulled away. Jeff McManus, Brandon Robinson and R.J. Hart got into a close battle for fourth. After fighting for second most of the race, Mangers slipped under Heverly coming off the second turn on the final lap for the runner-up spot. Brandon Robinson and Cory Texter pulled a few bikelengths in front of Dale Verzi, Joe Dragunas and Joey Parks in the 125cc final. For the entire race, Texter kept trying inside and outside moves on Robinson. On the final lap, they made a sandwich of a lapped rider, and that gave the Robinson's Electric-sponsored Robinson a slight margin to the end. While the XR 100 class is reserved for riders over 16, Cory Texter was able to talk his way into it. (He would turn 16 within the week). While most 12-year-olds are bigger than the diminutive Texter, he grabbed the holeshot from opening· race winner Chris Klinefelter, Douglas. and Jason Isennock. Those three got into a buddy-banging match, which let the Lancaster Harley·Davidsonsponsored rider put even more distance on them. Results 50 Oll-INJ: I. Stlm Sheckells (KTM); 2. JULY 25 Local knowledge plays a part at any racetrack, so one can imagine the anticipation that longtime Carson City racers felt when Nevada Motocross Development reopened Champion Speedway earlier this year. The loose, tacky composition of the track mirrors that of many of the practice spots in the area, so it's never a big surprise when a local puts in an exceptional ride in Carson. At the nonseries Friday night race held on July 25, the higher ranks of the 250cc division felt the presence of two longtime Carson riders who put in impressive rides to claim the wins in the 250cc Pro and Intermediate ranks. Josh Peterson performed the first half of the local sweep by taking a 1-1 score in the Pro division. Peterson pulled both holeshots aboard his CR250 and put in two smooth rides to hold off the advances of Yamaha rider Nick Baugh and Honda-mounted Cody Killam. Peterson has lived and raced in Carson City since his days as an 80cc Beginner, and his win marked the newest high point of his stillyoung Pro campaign. The circumstances of 250cc Intermediate winner Matt Hinkel are remarkably similar, as he's also grown up at the races in Carson. Hinkel had to battle it out with fast starter James Swain and eventual second·place finisher Darron Sturgeon to claim his win, but C!l!lW /iL:"} ~ 13 is perfect for everyone!
