This great day ended with an old-fashioned trophy presentation that was way cool. As much fun as it was to cover this event, this reporter won't come to another one without buying, borrowing or begging for a bike to ride, because it sure looked like a blast out there. Nick Nazak by 20 points. Brian Aherne was third. while Dan Bezaire was just off the podium in fourth. MOTA legend Dick DeBolt missed a podium finish by just two points. ending up fourth. while Tim Parish rounded out the top five. Illinois Flat Track series Round 4: Champaign County Fairgrounds Bigelow Toasts Champaign Walter had visions of a "double" in his head as the 65cc main took off, but Kyle Snyder had other ideas and quickly took control. HOr:leto.wn boy Clayton Clark was a distant third. Another Wisconsin rider, Brock Schwarzenbacher, won the 66-200cc main. Chip Perry. Alyssa Colvin and Huey Robinson battled over second, finishing in that order. Justin Hittle ran away with the win in the large 250cc class. Schwarzenbacher and Brad Turner battled over second. Jon Slaughter worked his way around Jerome Wells for fourth. The 450cc main saw Clayton Riggle take his TNT Honda-backed Honda to the first of his wins for the night, as he pulled away from a battle between Hittle and Brad Stegail. Hittie kept his Yamaha in second. Riggle returned in the Open main to hold off Scott Huffs Schmulbach Racing's XR750. After a slow start, Huff worked his way around KD Racing's Darren Carter and Schwarzenbacher, but he could not catch the hard-riding Riggle. The Veteran class was the largest of the night, and Kevin Snyder picked up where his son left off in the 8xc main. Kevin Snyder left a great race for second in his wake. Ken Hall, Terry Bond and Bill Gruwell fought it out, finishing in that order. The Pro-Sport main was by far the best contest of the night. Fat Boy Racing's Nick Daniels and Scott Shinn locked up in a fierce battle for the lead. Daniels' Rotax seemed to get through the deep ruts better than Shinn's Honda; Shinn led early, only to watch Daniels plow by. Shinn was back in front at the halfway mark, and the two leaders were joined by Dustin Crow, who was aboard Bryan Bigelow's Gardner Racing Honda. Daniels took the lead back at the white flag, and he was able to squeak out the win. In the Expert main, Bigelow got the holeshot on his Rotax and was never really challenged. CVM Touring's Cheney and Toungett were running second and third, but Pearson had his Weirbach Racing Rotax on the move. Pearson eventually grabbed second, and Cheney faded to fifth, behind IIlinoisBueil's Williams. By DAVE HOENIG CHAMPAIGN,IL, JULY 23 Track Enterprises brought round four of its five-rZlce l11inois Flat Track Series to the Champaign County Fair, along with a midweek half mile. A full program of horse racing had left the pea-gravel oval very soft, creating a very challenging surface. Eight Amateur classes supported the two Pro classes, making for a full program. Before any of the main events, the six fastest Experts rolled to the line for the Alan Read Memorial Dash For Cash. Gutterridge Harley-Davidson's Josh Toungett got the holeshot and held off the late-race blitz of Gardner Racing's Bryan Bigelow to take his share of the $700 purse. Rob Pearson, Nick Williams, Jerad Cheney and Shane Vance filled out the field. Chase Wright grabbed the lead in the 50cc main event and never looked back as he outdistanced Allyx Camp and Hayden Rook. Kevin Walter made the trip from Wisconsin worthwhile, as he ran away with the 65cc main. District 17 regulars Ian Keith and Adam Camp finished second and third. 450: I. Qaytm Rigg~ (Hon); 2. Illinois Flat Tracll5eries Round 5: Quincy Raceway Bigelow's Battle, Pearson Wins War By DAVE HOENIG QUINCY, IL, JULY 25 The fifth and final race of the Illinois Flat Track Series came to the fast quarter-mile of the Quincy Raceway. Even with a small turnout of riders, there were excellent races all night. Several races were decided between turn four and the finish line, capped by the spectacular and controversial finish of the Expert rna in event. Ian Keith and Springfield Derosear picked up their battle from the Amateur Nationals in the 50cc Chain main. Keith led a KTM sweep, as Kyle Vaughn won the 50cc Shaft main. Kody Vaughn and Kevin Walter locked up in great race for the 65cc win. Kody held off the fast-closing Walter, with Keith coming back for third. Katie Hawkins led the 85cc main until Kevin Vance slipped by. Kody took second a lap later and started to reel in the leader. In the last tum. Kody made his move, and he led by inches at the finish line. The 125-200cc main was another nailbiter, as Chas Rice and Phillip Smith battled back and forth. Each took turns at leading as they exchanged lines all around the track. Again the race was decided at the finish line by inches: Rice was the winner. Coincidentally, the 450cc and Open mains were as close to runaways as there were all night. Clayton Riggle rode his TNT Action Sports Honda to the 450cc win and his Illinois Buell-backed Rotax to the Open win. Justin Hittle and Dustin Crow supplied the action in the 450cc race, with Crow holding off the hard charge of Hittle. Smith returned to take fourth. The Open main saw Riggle leading a good race between Kyle Long and Richard Kent. Hittle hustled his Yamaha up from last place to second by the halfway mark, and Long got by Kent late in the race for third. Greg Vorhies got the holeshot in the Veterons main, with Billy Gruwell, Long and Bryan Smith bunched up in second. Jerry Cheney was quickly moving to the front on his son's Rotax, and at the crossed flags he edged by Gruwell for second place. Bryan settled into fourth, over John Brokken. The Pro-Sport main was an all-out war between Scott Shinn and Dustin Crow. Scott Huff and Ben Morton battled equally hard over third. They all were swapping positions and lines all the way around the fast quarter-mile. When the checkers flew, Crow had the Gardner Racing-backed Honda in front of Shinn. and Morton edged Huff for third. RJ Performance's Matt Burton put his Yamaha into tum one in front of the rest of the pack in the 16-lap Expert main. Burton was quickly set back by Bryan Bigelow, CVM Touring's Jerad, and Weirbach Racing's Rob Pearson. Bigelow and Pearson soon set sail, while Jerad and Burton battled over the last podium spot. Pearson caught Bigelow, and the two assumed the classic battle of high/low passing and the exchange of lines. Lap after lap, they traded spots. while Jerad and Burton closed on the leaders. Suddenly, as the leaders crossed the line to start lap 14, Pearson's bike stalled. Jerad collected Pearson and fell right at the line. The red flag came out as flagmen scattered, trying to get the field stopped before they came up on the fallen Jerad. The race was caUed complete, but the controversy was just starting. With the Illinois Flat Track Series points battle hanging in the balance. Bigelow was declared the winner. Burton garnered second, and Jerad and Pearson were moved to the back. Josh Toungett suddenly held third on his Gutterridge HarleyDavidson-backed Honda, over Shane Vance and Nick Williams. When the points were tallied, some of the sting went out of the finish for Pearson. By four points. Pearson was the winner over a tie between Bigelow and Williams. Toungett held down fourth, over another tie, between Shane and Jerad. Quincy Raceway Quincy. Illinois Results, July 25. 2002 (Round 5 of 5) 50 CHAIN: 1. Ian Keith (KTM); 2.
