ry over Scali when his engine grenaded, leaving a trail of oil and parts just
off the starting line.
"I guess we leaned on it a little too
hard," Treble said. "Actually, it broke
a connecting rod, and I don't think
that was a result of our tune-up. I
think it was just bad luck. At least we
got back on track this weekend. I
think we'll be in the hunt from here
on out."
With his win over Treble, Scali
made it to the final for the ninth time
in his career, where he faced Hines,
who was making his first trip to the
money round in just his 14th professional start. Hines qualified seventh
aboard his Vance £, Hines powered VRod and attracted much attention by
posting the fastest top speed in the
history of the class with a 195.28
mph run that eclipsed the previous
mark of 194.77 held by his HarleyDavidson teammate, G.T. Tonglet
during the 2001 season.
"You don't get any extra points or
money for having top speed, but at
least it's a sign of how far our V-twin
program has come in the last year,"
Hines said. "This bike has been on
the verge of running some serious
numbers all year, and we're starting
to see that."
Hines did run as quick as 7.11 on
race day, but in the final against

Scali, his bike made a hard move to
the left just off the starting line, and
he was unable to get it back in the
racing groove. The end result was a
disappointing 7.26 that wasn't enough
to keep pace with Scali's 7.17.
"Before the final, we took the wheel
off of [teammate] G.T.'s bike because
his tire looked a little better than
mine," said Hines. "It might have been
a bad call because when I dumped the
clutch, the bike went to the left, and I
couldn't pull it back. I knew J wasn't
going to catch Geno, and at that
point, all I could think was at least one
of our [Vance £, Hines] engines was
going to win the race."
