Fernwood Motocross Track Middleford Speedway Manuel Takes the King of MX Challenge Miller, Bowman Top Seaford By Roy JENKINS By MATT WOZNEY FERNWOOD, MS, JULY 19-20 Rogers Serpas put his creativity to work again, coming up with a new twist. Saturday night was a special "King of Motocross" Challenge race. All Open classes were given one long moto to see what kind of shape they were in for the upcoming National Championship races. The winner of each class won a personalized trophy with his name and "King of Motocross" engraved on the plate. Saturday evening's races were timed as follows: The 50ce Oil-Injected class raced five minutes plus two laps; the 50s and 60s raced 10 minutes; the 80s, ] 25s and Vets raced 20 minutes; and the Money class raced 30 minutes. On Saturday, the water truck broke down, but then it rained for a few minutes before SEAFORD, DE, JULY 20 The Seaford Motocross track, near Middleford Speedway just outside Seaford, Delaware, ran its fourth race of the year as a part of the Middle Atlantic Motocross Association. more commonly known as MAMA - a youth motocross organization that runs races in Maryland, Delaware. Virginia and Pennsylvania. This was MAMA's 12th race of the year. The two riders who took over the tough and sandy Seaford track were Suzuki jockey Jacob Miller and Yamaha-mounted Ellsworth Bowman. Miller dominated the Schoolboy Junior (12-14) and Alumni Support classes with 1-1 finishes. In the Schoolboy Junior class, Miller took the overall win over KTM riders Mike Kailer (3-2) and Steven Wilson Jr. (2-3). Miller totally dominated the Alumni Support class, while Suzuki jockey Amber Hughes (2-3) took second overall, and Kawasaki jockey Jeremy Horseman (3-5) was third. Bowman swept the 125cc A and Schoolboy Senior (15- 17) classes very easily. In the 125cc A class, Bowman topped Honda rider Bo Ostrowski (4-4) and Yamaha jockey Ryan Holt (3-5). Bowman won the Schoolboy Senior class over Yamaha riders Daniel Jones and Holt. As for Jones, he finished second in the first 125cc A moto but had a hard time in his second moto and finished 11th. ending up seventh overall. The MAMA Women's class has produced some of the top female racers in the nation. Taking the overall win in this very competitive class was Yamaha jockey Jessye Davis. She finished with a 2·] overall tally, but it didn't come easily. Kawasaki rider Amber Farley took an easy first-moto win, but Davis got a better start in moto two and took the checkered flag and the overall. Finishing behind these two were Suzuki rider Kristina Sharpe, Kawasaki rider Elizabeth Logan and Suzuki rider Meagan Cascio. The 125cc C class was so large, it needed to be split into two divisions. In Division One, Joseph LeSueur (2-1) took the overall win over his fellow Yamaha riders Adam Layman (1-3) and David Johnson (3-2). The second division saw yet another Yamaha rider with the win: ADM Racing/Holeshot Graphics rider Patrick Brady went 2-1 to take the overall aboard a YZ250F, over Honda rider Corey Norman and Yamaha rider Benjamin Deshong. In moto one, Brady took second behind fast Kawasaki jockey Cory Nailor. In the second moto, Nailor was leading until just before the green flag, when he fell in a turn and came out last after lap one. Brady, on the other hand, started about fourth but worked his way up to second and then passed the leader, who broke his bike in a turn. Brady took the mota win and the overall. Nailor managed to finish ninth in the second moto and finjshed fourth overall. eN practice, dampening the track. Then the clouds lightened to just a protective canopy from the blazing sun. Some of Saturday's best racing came from Loranger's Dustin Manuel and Covington's Cody Waggoner, in the 125cc class - until Waggoner's seat fell off and he pulled out. Manuel was also challenged by Mandeville, Louisiana, rider Stuart McAvoy. "I went from trying to catch Dustin to looking behind me," McAvoy said, "from offensive to defensive." "If he got close," Manuel said, "I would have gassed it. I had plenty left.On Sunday, McAvoy was unstoppable, scoring double-moto victories in the Vet and ] 25cc classes. At 4 years old, Kolby Johnson from Krotz Springs was the youngest rider in attendance. Doug Cook and Caitlin Freeman both competed in their first race. There were only a few mishaps on the track, and no one was injured the whole weekend. Only Lafayette's Neal Begnaud missed Sunday's race, due to a pit-bike crash that left him with some scrapes and bruises. Local racers Mac Edmonston, Jon Murry Barr, T-Don Lerille, Austin Driver, Hunter Foreman and Hunter Breland are all headed for Ponca City's NMA National Amateur Championships. The racers who are going to the AMA National Championship in Tennessee are Manuel, Jacob Babin, Cody Smiley, Ezra Angelle, Tyler Glascock and Tyler Holifieid. Results Saturday 500IL-INJ: 1.
