125cc and 250cc Pro classes aboard his F£,S Suzukis. The Vet ciasses belonged to Mark Roop. Nobody was able to match the Suzuki pilot's speed at this spectacular county fair track. the start, followed by Sun Enterprises rider Aaron Kennedy, Eric Bland and Frank Hardman. Durelle was gaining a bikelength per lap. Meanwhile, Brian Lehfeldt, who started in sixth on his Boes Mini-Storage/Preferred Property Brokers BSA B50, had moved into third by lap four, getting by both Kennedy and Hardman. On lap five, Hardman slipped into fourth, while Durelle continued to putt away at the front. In the race for second, Bland ran in the place position for six laps, but Lehfeldt got a better drive off turn four and took the spot. Bland fought back but was unable to run down Lehfeldt. Hardman raced by Kennedy to grab fourth. The top three at the finish were Durelle, Lehfeldt and Bland. The largest class of the race was the Open Amateurs. Marty Bland got the holeshot on his B£,B Leathers Yamaha, followed by Dave Austin, Aaron Tryzna and Jeff Steinberger. On lap three, Tom Troudt iowsided his BSA in turn three; Tryzna had no choice but to go over the top and take a hard fall. Though Tryzna was able to get to the pits under his own power, he was definitely not up to making the restart. Ten riders lined up single file for the restart; Austin, Troudt and Tryzna had all dropped out. On the restart, Marty once again took his spot at the front of the pack. Steinberger, riding his Jim Sprafke/Sonny Anderson Yamaha. hung on to Marty's tail. John Castle moved to third after runnjng in sixth at the start. Steinberger was waiting for Marty to slip the groove so he could move into the lead, but Marty rode mistake-free to the checkers for the win. Marty won. with Steinberger a solid second. Scott Hoffman moved to third on the final iap, sneaking under Castle for third. By the 600cc Pro main, the track had a two-bike-wide groove. Durelle, on his AraijMark Erickson!Apex Sports-sponsored CRF450, got the start and pulled out an immediate two-bikelength lead and was on his way to the win. John Griffin, also CRF-mounted, tried to keep the leader in sight, while Lehfeldt was looking for any way to get by. At halfway, Mike Nicholas, riding the Nicholas Racing/General Engineering/Durelle Racing Suzuki 450, had his hands full keeping fourth, as Eric was putting a wheel up inside coming out of tum four. Lehfeldt kept the pressure on Griffin, but Griffin answered all of Lehfeldt's moves, and the order remained the same for the duration, as Durelle cruised to the win, over Griffin and Lehfeldt. NEW LEXINGTON, OH, JULY 16 It was all about Steve Andrich at this county fair motocross in southern Ohio· although fast, young Amateur racer Levi Kilbarger had a good night as well, at round seven of the Ohio County Fairs Motocross Championship Series. Andrich was indeed the man in the l25cc Pro class, stealing the show aboard his Suzuki of Greenville-backed RM125. Then he stepped aboard his 250 to manhandle the Over 25 A class at this terrific little circuit behind the midway. The star of the 250cc Pro class was Levi Reid - like Andrich, a Californian spending some time at these motocross-crazy circuits of Ohio, where you can race almost every night of the week, if you so desire. Reid not only won the 250cc Pro ciass, he also placed third, behind Chris Whitcraft, in the I 25cc Pro class. In Amateur race action, Kilbarger, of nearby Logan, and who recently returned to racing after recuperating from a broken collarbone, was just too fast for the competition in New LeXington. He flung his YZ250F in for two convincing wins, taking the Schoolboy and l25cc B races in this one·moto-format night program. The old guys were dicing hard, too, at this rain-plagued event; the moisture fell about halfway through the night's program, adding to the elderly racers' enjoyment of the festivities. Dickie Hoy slid his way into the Over 30-c1ass win, and Kim "Hammadog-2" Hamilton won the Over 40 class. Nobody but nobody was stopping Brock Bowman at this event. Bowman crushed the packs of riders chasing him in the 65cc and 85cc Mini Junior classes, screaming his Kawasakis through to victory in both races. Results 50 4·ST'RK: 1. Kristopher Scott. 50 OPEN: I. PEll.ETT HILUARD, OH, JULY 15 Pro racer Chris Whitcraft of nearby Pickerington, Ohio, was the man to beat in Hilliard, site of round six of the Ohio County Fairs Motocross Championship Series. The l8-yearold AMA Nationals regular was unbeatable on the night. Getting quick starts and tearing away from the pack was seemingly enough to distance Whitcraft from the competition, yet his blistering speed through the tricky whoops section after the finish line was crucial to his big wins, as well. Whitcraft fought off the early charges of Californian Levi Reid in the 125cc class. Reid has been staying and training with Whitcraft, and he was on the gas hard aboard his Suzuki RM. The 250cc class was all about staying ahead of Shaun Kuchler, as he screamed around the track in pursuit of Whitcraft. Derek Sturgell was riding in brilliant fashion aJl night, capturing third-place finishes in both the 72 AUGUST 13, 2003' eye • PEll.ETT Perry County Fairgrounds: Andy Whitelow (85), Derek Sturgell (19), Chris Whitcraft (149) and the rest of the 250cc Pros launch off the line at round seven of the Ohio County Fairs Motocross Championship Series, in New Lexington. Bremen Race Park Scogin Scoops Up Round 13 By FAT BILLY BREMEN, GA, JULY Ig At last, a dry weekend in Georgial The heat was in the 90s, but the dry weather was worth it. The eager riders in the long sign-up line there were almost 200 on hand - were greeted with a perfectly prepped track. The 50cc Shaft class may have the smallest riders, but the racing was big-time. Polini pilot Travis Norton was the man on this evening. KTM-mounted Colton Ford took the second spot on the podium, and a hard-charging Braden Bunker finished a hard-earned third on his Atlanta Auto Brokers Yamaha. KTM rider Austin Elder dominated the 50cc (7-8) event with no problem. Hayden Richardson, also KTM-mounted, was IiMr. Consistent" with second overall for the event. Jacob Seagraves had to work hard, but his KTM pulled him through for the last podium position. The 65cc (7-9) contest was the property of KTM rider Nic Kimsey. The story of the night was that of the second moto, in which Justin Parmer got the holeshot on his Kawasaki, and Kimsey had to get by him to win. Kawasaki jockey Corey Davis held firm for third. The 80cc Beginner class was the largest of the night. Kawasaki jockey Drew Carter won the last moto to secure the overall. Scott Nivak, another Kawasaki man, earned the second·place honors. Suzuki man Wesley Delong rounded out the third spot with a strong ride. The 125cc C event was the property of Bobby Scogin and Clayton Henderson, on their Freewheeling Hondas; they took first and second, respectively. Yamaha-mounted Matt Turner rode steadily for the third spot. It was a great contest, to say the least. Yamaha pilot Brad Crane had the handle on the 250cc C class. Joel Derkser won the last moto but ended up second due to a fourth-place finish in moto one. Robert McGrew finished a strong third on his Kawasaki. Apparently, the time McGrew has spent prepping the track on the front-end loader helped his lap times. Michael Henderson, on his LSD Racing Honda, did the deed on this night in the Over 30 and Over 35 races. Honda rider Russ Cas· tie was second in the Over 30 duel, and Jason Tubbs finished third to complete the all-red podium. In the Over 35 contest, Rick Hodges ended up second, after Henderson. The bike that drew the most attention was the YZ490 of Robert Lemenstoll. That's correct - a YZ490. Many of the young riders were younger than the YZ, but Lemenstoll was good for third.
