He wasn't kidding: he was absolutely flying. In the Over 30 A class, former nationally ranked Pros Carlo Coen and Kurt McMillen rekindled their decade·old rivalry and positive· Iy hammered each other from the drop of the gate. McMillen took the holeshot and set a blistering pace, with Coen tucked in behind. (oen, on the Jim Moroney's KTM, shadowed McMillen·s every move. Meanwhile, Yamahamounted Mike Spear was battling Clark. who was all over him like a pit bull on a bone. Phil DeSousa was fifth but was off the pace of the top four. The Spear/Clark duel matched the intensity of the Coen/McMilien battle up front. For the entire race, Coen stuck a wheel in, but McMillen was on a mission, and he turned up the wick every time until the checkers flew. At the flag, it was McMillen with a well· deserved win. followed by Coen. Spear, Clark and DeSousa. In moto two, Coen grabbed the holeshot on the cat-quick KTM 250, with McMillen In tow. McMillen passed Coen within three turns but was promptly repassed by Coen. DeSousa gated better and found himself in third. with Clark at his rear tire and Spear settling into fifth. Halfway into the second lap, Coen slowed drastically fumbling with his helmet. To the spectators, it seemed he was adjusting his goggles; in actuality, a flying rock had hit his front number plate with such savage force that it ricocheted up under his helmet and split his chin wide open. He was a bloody mess in the pits afterward. Clark zapped Coen for second. Coen recovered quickly and gutted it out. putting on a charge that saw him draw closer to Clark and soon pass the "Kawboy." Clark repassed Coen, who settled in and then made the final pass on the last lap. McMillen was long gone. Clark was third. Spear. in a desperate move, bullied his way past DeSousa for fourth. DeSousa was a lonely fifth at the checkers. "I can't believe it [the rockJ hit me that hard," mumbled eoen in the pits after the race. "My whole mouth is numb.
