He wasn't kidding: he was absolutely
flying.
In the Over 30 A class, former nationally
ranked Pros Carlo Coen and Kurt McMillen
rekindled their decade·old rivalry and positive·
Iy hammered each other from the drop of the
gate. McMillen took the holeshot and set a
blistering pace, with Coen tucked in behind.
(oen, on the Jim Moroney's KTM, shadowed
McMillen·s every move. Meanwhile, Yamahamounted Mike Spear was battling Clark. who
was all over him like a pit bull on a bone. Phil
DeSousa was fifth but was off the pace of the
top four. The Spear/Clark duel matched the
intensity of the Coen/McMilien battle up front.
For the entire race, Coen stuck a wheel in,
but McMillen was on a mission, and he turned
up the wick every time until the checkers
flew. At the flag, it was McMillen with a well·
deserved win. followed by Coen. Spear, Clark
and DeSousa.
In moto two, Coen grabbed the holeshot on
the cat-quick KTM 250, with McMillen In tow.
McMillen passed Coen within three turns but
was promptly repassed by Coen. DeSousa
gated better and found himself in third. with
Clark at his rear tire and Spear settling into
fifth. Halfway into the second lap, Coen
slowed drastically fumbling with his helmet.
To the spectators, it seemed he was adjusting
his goggles; in actuality, a flying rock had hit
his front number plate with such savage force
that it ricocheted up under his helmet and split
his chin wide open. He was a bloody mess in
the pits afterward.
Clark zapped Coen for second. Coen
recovered quickly and gutted it out. putting on
a charge that saw him draw closer to Clark
and soon pass the "Kawboy." Clark repassed
Coen, who settled in and then made the final
pass on the last lap. McMillen was long gone.
Clark was third. Spear. in a desperate move,
bullied his way past DeSousa for fourth.
DeSousa was a lonely fifth at the checkers.
"I can't believe it [the rockJ hit me that
hard," mumbled eoen in the pits after the
race. "My whole mouth is numb. Did you see
what it did to the number plate?'·
