Brown, the defending class champ from Cortland, New York, eventually put some distance between himself and Fatzinger. Harley-Davidson racer George Wills grabbed the first of his two wins in the Dinosaur race, putting his hand-shifting WR out front by the second turn and staying firmly in STORY AND PHOTOS BY MATT BENSON Jim Monegan won the Senior and Sportsman 600cc events and placed in the top flve In two other classes at round 11 of the AHRMAlThe C...... Motor CyclelMetro Rac.... Dirt Track Series. ASHLAND,OH,JULY18 im Monegan continues to make the long haul from Twisp, Washington, worthwhile. At the AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days round of AHRMA's Vintage National Series, Monegan scored wins in the Sportsman 600cc and Over 50 Senior classes, and he earned top-five finishes in the Sportsman 250cc class and the huge '70s Singles division. After 11 of 13 rounds, Monegan holds the points leads in both the Senior and '70s Singles classes and was second in Sportsman 600cc, fifth in Sportsman 250cc and 10th in Sportsman 750cc; that's five of AHRMA's 10 classes - not a bad season so far! The deep-cushion surface of the Ashland half mile is always a favorite, J AUGUST 13, 2003' EO U EO and the Friday night event drew well over 150 vintage entries and a crowd that packed the grandstands and lined the fences more than halfway around the track. The '70s Singles class alone boasted more than 30 entries. It took 23 heat races and four semis to get to the 10 final events. Up first was the Senior class, for riders aged 50 and older on pre-1975 machines. While Monegan built a big lead on his Honda single, Triumph riders Melvin Brown and Ed Fatzinger • e n e _ so command. Bruce Argetsinger had his Royal Enfield a solid second all race, while behind him, Beno Rodi, on his Indian-Enfield, emerged with third place after a scrap with the Harleymounted Barry Jenkins. In the brakeless Classic 250cc class, Bultaco jockey Barry Baker streaked to the front at the green flag and stayed there, chased by fellow Ohioans John Bova, on another Bultaco, and George Ackley, with a Harley Sprint. Behind that three-rider breakaway was a battle for position that at times involved six riders. A particularly good race was between Rusty Lowry, on a Sprint, and Triumph-mounted Mike Metzler, with Lowry earning fourth position over the Floridian in a dispute that went all the way to the checkered flag. Monegan, on his Honda, led the Sport~man 600cc contest from wire to wire. BSA-mounted Robert McLendon III closed the gap noticeably from time to time - especially on the last lap - but never got within serious striking distance. Class champ Mike Connell and Tom Morgan rounded out a top-four group that left the rest of the pack behind. The Veteran final, for riders 35 and older, was one of the evening's best. The Yamaha-mounted duo of Carl Thomas and Mike Scott raced side by side for much of the race, drawing themselves far away from the rest of the field. On the final lap, Scott gained some measure of control and took the win, over Thomas. A quarter of a lap back in third was Doug Horner, on another Yamaha, while fourth went to Husqvarna jockey Ron Bertrand after he spent his race working his way up through the field. Canadian Jeff Metzloff used his Can-Am to dominate the Sportsman 250cc class. Behind him were a couple of good battles - Ben Evans and Morgan going at it over second place and, further back, Mike Ashton and Monegan deciding who would be fourth. The latter eventually went to Ashton, over fellow Can-Am pilot Monegan. The race for second, however, went right to the end, with Evans, on his Can-Am, just holding
