CA, JULY 5 Dave Eropkin had his work cut out for him at the third round of The Old- Timers' Summer Nights Series. Kirk Bassett kept the pressure on Eropkin throughout the first moto in the Master Division, but Eropkin barely held onto the lead for the win. In the second moto, Tom Burgess tried his hand at dethroning Eropkin but could only manage second. Eropkin took the overall with a 1-1 tally. Apparently having a "senior moment," Yamaha-mounted David Shelton was leading the second heat of the Over 40 Amateurs when he forgot the track format had been rerouted for this nighttime event; he went straight over the table while the rest of the pack went left. By the time he got turned around, he was in fourth. but he stiil pulled off a second·place finish for third overall, behind Bob Tocco (I-I) and Randy Bruce (2·2). In a gallant last-lap, second-moto charge, John Lovett passed Steve Donaldson (2-2) to take the overall in the Over 40 Expert division. In the Over 50 Expert class. Kirk Freeman's 1-2 finishes were good enough for the overall victory, even though Gary Willison came back from a fourth-place first-moto finish to win the second moto. Results 40* NOV; I. JULY 5 Intermountain Speedway racers Mark Van Zuyen and Brendan "Wild Man" Fennessey walked away with the top honors at this year's Salmon River Days ISRA Speedway races. The track in the rodeo arena was in great condition for the annual event held before the DemolItion Derby. In Scratch heat one, Montana's Tyler "Hur· ricane" Hansen drew the pole, with Idaho riders "Crazy" Carson Shefts in two, Tom "The Sherminator" Sherman in three and Marty Shefts in four. After the dust had cleared, Hansen took the direct transfer to the Scratch main, with Carson second and Sherman third. Marty did not finish after highsiding off his son Carson's rear wheel. Heat two saw Fennessey take the win, with Van Zuyen second and Montana rider Todd Hunter in third. In heat three, Sherman took first, Carson was second. Hansen was third, and Marty was fourth. Heat four saw Fennessey winning again, with Hunter second and Van Zuyen third. The last·chance qualifier had Hunter on the pole, Marty in two and Van Zuyen in three. Hunter got a great start and led from start to finish to take the finai spot in the Scratch main. Marty and Van Zuyen were out. For the richest race of the night. the ISRA Scratch main, Sherman drew the pole, with Hansen in two, Carson in three, Fennessey in four and Hunter, fresh from the LCQ, in five. Sherman got the jump on the field off the pole and led for a lap before Fennessey took him underneath and led from there to the win, with Sherman in second, young Carson (who has greatly improved his riding after a few days of coaching by Steve Lucero at Ken Maely's track in California) in third, Hansen in fourth and Hunter in fifth. As ISRA race promoter Shane McAfee lined up the riders for the Handicap main event, the crowd was almost at full capacity around the arena. The last race of the night, and the wildest event of the year, the Demo Derby, was about to start. McAfee put Van Zuyen and Hunter on the 10-yard line, fatherand-son team Marty and Carson on the 20, Hansen on the 30, and Sherman and Fennessey on the 40. The flag dropped, and Sherman worked his way through the field to take the lead after some first-turn bunching occurred that took most of the riders wide. Sherman continued to pull away, while Fennessey wasn't so lucky at getting by the other riders. Suddenly, on lap three, Hunter went down hard on the front straight, causing a red flag and stopping the race. As misfortune would have it, Sherman and Hunter couldn't make the restart due to mechanical problems. Alone on the 10-yard line, Van Zuyen led from start to finish, with Hansen second, Marty (still sore from his heat-race wreck) in third, Carson fourth, and race favorite Fennessey fifth on his bikeboneyard.com Jawa after looping it out in the first turn and trailing the pack for the rest of the race. Alien won the first three races of the series and then made the top five for the rest of the season. He also fought some good battles with Scott Summers. The Sarge's Cycies/KTM/Pro Action of Kentucky/Scott·backed Gibson came on strong during the ninth round's Box Hollow event after spending his season switching bike sizes. "I'm not doing that next year," Gibson said. "I'm sticking with the same size bike throughout, because I think that hurt me in the long run." Gibson finished the season second overall. Near the end of the season, the overall was still up for grabs. Therefore, Hazzard Hill was a knock-down, drag-out fight. At the end of the race, Summers took the checkered flag, while Allen became this season's overall winner. Gibson and Cregg ended the race with a battle for second place. However, during the last race of the season, Cregg entered an Indiana Hare Scrambles instead of the Mid-South's Cottonmouth event. Nevertheless, he clinched third overall for the Mid-South Series. (He also won the Indiana Hare Scrambles Championship.) Timmy P'Pool and Aian Westerfield. the 250cc/Open A ieaders. finished fourth and fifth overall. Jeffrey Welch took the Four·Stroke C ciass by surprise, winning every event he entered. Ronnie Hackett won the Super Senior class. "Twenty-three years ago, I raced the very first Mid-South event in Clarksville, Tennessee," Hackett recounted. "There were 105 riders on the line. Now look at how far we have grown. It's been exciting to be a part of its growth. Back then, we raced to have fun. Now, it's all about the competition. Even the old guys are competitive." PhillIp Graham just caught the riding bug at a Summer Camp race, in the 200cc C class. Then he signed up for the winter series points in Greenville, Kentucky. and won the class eight races later. Prizes totalIng $31.000 was provided by Pirelli, Maxxis, Moose, White Brothers, Scott, Kawasaki, Parts Unlimited, Moose, and all the other outstanding Mid-South Hare Scrambles Series sponsors.
