Round 3: Ascot Parte Things Get Lively at Ascot DORA. OK, JULY 4 As the first set of motos got under way at round three of the Arkansas/Oklahoma Suzuki Triple Crown Series, the two toughest competitors of the evening seemed to be the heat and the humidity. Familiar smells of premix and bug spray, as well as the sounds of revving motocross bikes, reminded the crowd that summer was in full swing - and that the racing was about to begin. As the gate fell for the first 250cc Expert moto, Blair Lively made a quick getaway aboard his Kawasaki of Fayetteville KX250, taking the lead. He was followed by Yamahamounted James Meador, Reynard Modifica· tions-backed CR250R rider Shawn Wright. and Brandon Cheek. on his Suzuki of Fayettevillesponsored RM250. All four Japanese bike brands were represented in the lead pack, but it was the green bike of Lively that stayed out front throughout the early portion of the moto. Behind him. Wright was desperately seeking a path around Meador as they battled for the second position. Halfway though the moto, Wright made the pass, but not before smash· ing several fingers on the YZ's pipe in a rutted comer. When the checkered fiag flew, Lively held on for the moto win, with Wright in second, Cheek sneaking by for third. and Meador fourth, with what appeared to be an injured foot. In the second moto. Wright absconded with the holeshot, this time followed by Lively and Cheek. Meador sat out the moto, obvious· Iy feeling the effects of the first moto. As exciting as the first moto had been, it was not to be the second time out. Wright won the moto as well as the overall, Lively ended up second, and Cheek was third. In 125cc Expert action. Lively again made away with the holeshot. chased by Cheek and Wright. However. halfway through the first lap, Cheek fell, allowing Wright to close in on liveIy. The two stayed within a wheel of each other for the ensuing lap until Wright stole the lead. Lively, never showing any sign of giving up, stayed tire to tire with Wright. Cheek, meanwhile. continued to push. but he was unable to catch the lead duo. At the end of the moto, Wright took the win, just inches ahead of Lively - after which both of them slowed down for a celebratory "high five" and a handshake for a great race. In the second moto, Lively got a great start. followed by Wright and Cheek. Lively seemed to be searching for lines, using every inch of the track. At the halfway mark. Wright washed out his front wheel in a comer, giving Lively some much-needed breathing room. Wright remounted and continued in second place, just a few seconds ahead of Cheek. Lively took the moto win and the overall victo· ry; Wright and Cheek finished second and third. respectively. In 65cc action, Garrett Comer used great starts and consistent riding to take the 65cc (9-11) and 65cc Open-class victories. "I had fun tonight," Comer said. "I made my main in Mammoth last week. and I think it helped me to go faster now." Lane McCall also had a great night, sweeping the 50cc (7 -9) and 65cc (6-8) classes. Ascot Park Dora.
