"We focused on OUf Los Banos Top Gun Shootout Series for the last two years during the summer months, said AMP's Corky Azevedo. "A lot of these guys go to Ponca City and Loretta Lynn's, and they need to race on National-caliber tracks, so due to a lot of requests, we brought back the summer races II with a five-race series." In the first 125cc Novice moto. Karmann got off the gate with a fourth-place start, as Beau Weigand, fresh out of the Mini ranks, snagged the holeshot. (In fact, Weigand was riding the very same Yamaha YZI25 he won at the 2002 AMP Spring Series drawing.) However, as the race progressed, Weigand began to slip back, as Buddy Anderson, Karmann and Greg Fouts took over the top three spots, respectively. Anderson and Karmann then opened up a gap on the field as the two battled for the lead. Karmann made his move on the white-fiag lap, taking the victory just a few bikelengths ahead of Anderson. Fouts. James Fuller and Curtis Roe rounded out the top five. Moto two saw Fouts, aboard his YZ250F, shoot out to the lead, ahead of Karmann, Anderson 'and the rest of the field. However, Fouts' lead was short· lived, as Karmann and Anderson shot by within the first lap. With clear track ahead of him, Karmann quickly put some distance on Anderson and was never challenged all the way to the checkers. In fact, the same top five from moto one were fairly spread out, and all five riders duplicated their first-moto scores. The ] 25cc Intermediate class featured a 10-rider field, and it was Trafton Chandler taking a 1·1 score on the day for the overall. The San Luis Obispo resident led every lap of both motos while, behind him, mota scores were a little less consistent. Anthony Maniglia came through when it counted. however, with a solid second-place ride in moto two, and, coupled with his fourth in moto one, that snagged him the runner-up spot on the day. Honda pilot Jake Osborne rounded out the top three with a 3-5 showing. Results Pee Wee Track 50 (4·6) STK: 1. Derik Silva (Pol); 2. Kyle Greener (KTM); 3. BNno MOred8 (KTM). 50 (7.8) STK: 1. Starwest Cycle Park Frigo Freezes 'em Out BY MIKE AND BARBARA PALUZZI MORENO VALLEY, CA, JUNE 28 James "Bubba" Frigo was the rider to beat in the 65cc Novice class on Saturday night at Starwest. In the first moto of the 65cc Novice class, Frigo nailed the holeshot, followed closely by Nitro Johnson and Eric Yorba. Frigo set the pace and had no problems keeping it under control. Johnson had a good handle on second, while Yorba had his hands full with Jacob Shaw. Yorba was able to gain some breathing room, while Matthew Parker was closing in on Shaw. The checkered flag came out for Frigo, Johnston and Yorba. In the second mota, Frigo again absconded with the holeshot. and everyone else fell into the same positions as in the first moto. The only change was that Parker managed to hold off Shaw for the fourth-place position. Frigo took the win, followed by Johnson, Yorba and Parker. In the Intermediate division, Shawn Gritten took two moto wins, over Jordan Burns. T earn Green rider Jake Canada put in a very impres· sive ride to take the overall in the 65cc Expert class, over his teammate Michael Leib. Temecula Motorsports-backed Tyler Gallegos put in two impressive motos to claim the overall victory in the 250cc Beginner class. Ricky Briggs absconded with the first-moto holeshot, followed by Gallegos and Bobby Mathison. Briggs took advantage of his early lead, but Gallegos was close behind, planning his move. Briggs was able to hold off Gallegos lap after lap, and when the checkers new, it was Briggs, Gallegos and Mathison. In the second moto, Gallegos put his Suzuki at the front with the holeshot and never looked back. Meanwhile, Seth Kramer was on the move. Briggs, after a bad start, was fighting his way toward the front. Gallegos was able to obtain some breathing room, while Kramer stayed strong in second, and Mathison took the last podium spot. The checkers waved for Gallegos, followed by Kramer and Mathison. Aryton Ward had the crowd on its feet as he battled for first place in the 50cc Stock Beginner (4-6) class on 5tarwest', small track. In second at the start, Aryton held the throttle open, trying corner after corner to pass the first-placed rider, Austin Siefert. A spinout caused the KTM rider to drop to third after he made a daring attempt to pass Siefert after the highway doubles. Aryton made a great comeback in the second moto, placing second overall, behind the winner, Sieferf. Results Small Tlllck P/W 50 (4·6): 1. TyJer Rosa (Yom): 2. Brandi Archer (Yam); 3. Midwest Supercross Championships Gibson, Skaggs Go At It! By RUPERT X. PELLEn NELSONVILLE, OH, JUNE 28 Jeff Gibson of Thornville, Ohio, and Nathan Skaggs of Chiliicothe, Ohio, were the big winners of the Action Sports Promotions Midwest SX Championships in Nelsonville, each taking a bunch of money and a Pro-class win. as hundreds of Amateurs and Pros converged on this technical track to race in front of a mammoth crowd. Promoter Drew Wolfe invited the area's top Pro racers to his annual summer· time extravaganza, and the racing was fast and furious. In the first 125cc Pro mota, Gibson set a fast pace out front on his DFW KTM, followed by Skaggs, on his Yamaha of Troy-backed YZ125, and Husky/Moto Extremes-sponsored Willy Browning. Then Browning went down hard in the infield. Gibson ran away with the win. A charging Chris Whitcraft came in sec· ond, closely followed by Skaggs in third. Skaggs got a big holeshot in moto two, and Gibson had a job of it, working up to catch him. When Gibson finally did, he slid out in a corner, and Skaggs stole off with the win. Skaggs got the overall with an incredibly fast and impressive performance on the evening. Gibson's 1-3 finishes were good for second, and Steve Andrich carded a steady 4·2 showing for the third spot on the podium. In the first 250cc Pro moto, the horeshot went to Skaggs, and he never let up. Gibson struggled with traffic, but he came back angry and strong in mota two, flashing his borrowed Honda CR250 in for the win and the overall victory, Skaggs stormed home a close second, taking second overall with his 1-2 rides. Whitcraft (4-3) was third. In the Mini classes, Kawasaki jockey Justin Wages was the star of two 85cc classes, while F&S Suzuki's Walker Brightwell was the star of the 65cc class and the Mini Junior (7-11) division. Brightwell skied high above the fin· ish-line tabletop, thrilling the packed house of fans. In Amateur race action, Yamaha-mounted Mike Ivers took the big win in the 16-24 class, with KTM support rider Michael Willard in second. This would be Willard's worst ride of the night, as he then stomped the B classes and"" rode with staggering qUickness around thE? technical track. .,1
