With the weather being hot all week, the night was very cool - in more ways than one. The track was both fun and safe. and everyone had a good time. The phrase "keep it in the family" can mean many things, but for the Mast family. it means motocross! On this night, the crowd cheered on three generations of Masts who were on the track and ready to race: grandfa· ther Jake Mast, father Josh, and son Gage. In the Over 40 class, Jones Powerspor1s KTM rider Jake Mast set a good example by taking the win in both motos for the overall. Yamaha rider Ken Graf kept him in sight but couldn't match his pace on this night; Graf finished second on both motos and overall. In the 250cc A class, KTM-mounted Josh Mast showed how things were done by taking the win. He put on a great show and showed everyone the fast way around the track. In the 50cc Junior class, KTM rider Gage Mast didn't have the same luck as Dad and Grandpa: He rode well but finished third for the night. Dean Gall put his bike in the front of the pack and did not want to give that spot up; he held on for both moto wins and the overall victory. Dakota Heflin finished second in both motos and second overall. By the end of the night, the Mast crew had proved that motocross is truly a family sport. Results 50 BEG: I. Caleb Richardson: 2. Faulkner had a little tougher time in the Vet class. but he kept his cool and held on for the win after a race· long battle with Gene Yopp. Ed Heiden put his Vor into third. ahead of Tony Graham and David Brown. Yopp topped the Over 40 final after holding off Ed Clark and Brown. Yopp returned once more in the XR 100 Stock class but had to settle for third. BY JOSH O'NEAL BAKERSFIELD, CA, JUNE 21 The fifth round of the Mesa Marin Series got under wayan a pretty nice summer night. Round-four winner Casey Yarrow shot off the gate and won the Open heat race, while Leo "Pucho" Bagnis, Don Hart and Rick Pearce would all join him in the Dash For Cash. The Sportsman heat race saw "Red" Ed Coffey take the win and Cliff Sullivan cross the line in second; both would move to the Dash. The Dash For Cash featured the top four from the Open event and the top two from the Sportsman contest. After each lap, the lastplaced rider would be gone, until four were left for a two-lap dash. Yarrow took the cash, and neither Pucho nor Hart could catch him. Pearce broke his chain on the hunt. Cole Cates, in only his third Supermoto race at Mesa Marin, took the holeshot but missed a gear and let Sullivan go by for the lead. Sullivan led for a few laps until Cates. Coffey and Scott Nakamura all got by him. Nakamura soon fell down, leaving Coffey and Cates battling it out for the lead. Cates won the main on his PMS Motorsports KTM 380, and Coffey finished a close second on his Kern KTM 450. Emie Lyles, Sullivan and Tyler Snow finished out the top five. As the Open main was about to start, the front row held Yarrow and Pucho in one and two. Ha rt, Pearce and Josh Chisum rounded out the front row. The motors were pounding. When the flag came out. Pearce finally looked like the champion we used to know and grabbed a strong holeshot. Yarrow and Hart were running behind him. Pearce looked ready to take off for the win. but about two laps into the race Yarrow got by him. There was a nice gap between Pearce and Pucho, who had gotten a bad start but was making up time. Fairfield Honda's Yarrow started to put some ground on Pearce. A few laps later, Pucho got by Pearce at the end of Pit Row. Pucho then immediately headed off in search of the long· gone leader. Hart also caught Pearce. but once Pearce saw him, he stepped it up as they encountered some lapped riders. Pucho got pretty darn close, with only about a six-bike gap between them, but Yarrow held on for the win. Pearce finished third, with Hart and Chisum next. Results SPTSMN: I. Cole Cat~s (KTM): 2.
