CANADA, JULY 6 Damon Huffman edged out teammate Jean· Sebastien Roy for the second consecutive week to take the overall win at round four of the Canadian National Motocross Series. In a repeat of round three, Roy won moto one, with Huffman finishing second. Mota two came down to the last lap, with Huffman capitalizing on a split-second mistake by the defending champ. Huffman took the win, with Roy in second, forcing Roy to settle for another second overall. The win moves Huffman into second place in the series points standings, just 30 points behind Roy. It was an unfortunate weekend for Craig Decker, who had been second in the points. Decker got tied up in a first·moto crash and got a poor moto·two start, finishing up the weekend in sixth with 9·6 motos. It was the first weekend Decker missed the podium; he is currently third in the standings, 11 points behind Huffman. In the first 250cc moto, Darcy Lange took the early lead, with Doug Dehaan running in second. Roy quickly moved from third to first and, by lap three, was building his traditional lead. Dehaan held on to third, while Huffman worked his way through the pack. By midmoto, Huffman had passed Dehaan and had set his Sights on Lange. Sixteen laps in, Huffman got by Lange and had Roy in sight, but time ran out, and Roy took the win, Huffman settled for second. Lange took third. Roy got the- second·moto holeshot, with Derrick Fisher running second. Greg Schnell gated third, his best start of the series. Roy immediateiy started to pull away, while Fisher did his best to keep both Schnell and Huffman at bay. Huffman blew by Schnell for third and quickly got by Fisher for second. Fisher crashed on one of the steep downhill sections, ending his moto. Marco Dorsch and Marco 70 JULY 30,2003· eye I e Dube battled for fourth. Roy looked untouchable. but Huffman gradually started to close the gap. As lapped traffic slowed the leaders, Huffman had Roy within reach. With the white nag waving. Roy slid out in a hard-packed corner, giving Huffman the chance he needed to make the pass, "I could see him up there, and I was gain· ing on him ever so slightly every single lap, n said Huffman. "It's all about not giving up and hanging it out a little bit more than I normally do, and unfortunateiy JSR made a little bobbIe, and I made the pass, He was really fast through the big sweeper, and there was just no more time left. I wouldn't have got him, but he made a mistake. That's racing, and I'll take it." Regina saw the ciose of the 125cc West Series, and Evan Laughridge earned his first Pro title. Laughridge sealed the championship after the first moto but went on to battle hard for the win In the second moto. Laughridge took the title 36 points ahead of Bart Stephenson, who edged out Jimmy Nelson in the second mota, leaving him five points ahead of Nelson in the series. Laughridge won six of the eight motos in the series and never earned the holeshot award. He leaves the series feeling confident about contesting the 250cc class. "I really feel that if I get good starts, I can run up front," said Laughridge, "I just really want to show people that when I was riding four motos, maybe that wasn't possible. but when I'm just riding 250cc, I think they are going to be a little surprised." In moto one, the battle everyone had been waiting for finally occurred. Nelson grabbed the holeshot, with Kyle Beaton in second. Laughridge finished the first lap in fourth, behind Tracey Johnson. It didn't take long for Laughridge to close in on Nelson and pressure him for the lead. The pair traded the lead several times, with Nelson eventually coming out n e vv :so r-----------------,~ UJ ~ UJ '" Z g ..... :J " ~ ~ l: Q. Moto Valley Raceway: Diablo Honda's Doug Dehaan (5) leads the eventual overall winner, Blackfoot Honda's Damon Huffman (120), in the first 250cc Pro moto at round four of the Canadian National Motocross series in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. on top. Stephenson worked his way up from a seventh to finish third. Beaton did a good job of holding him off until late in the race. The pair traded third and fourth, with Stephenson claiming the final podium spot. The pressure was on, as Stephenson would have to finish ahead of Nelson in the second moto to hang on for second place in the series. Tiger Lacey grabbed the holeshot in the second moto, with Colton Facciotti in second. Stephenson got the jump off the gate but overshot the first corner, leaving him mid· pack. Laughridge took the lead on lap one, with Lacey second and Nelson third. Stephenson passed everyone until he caught Nelson. Stephenson got by Nelson by midmoto and started closing on Laughridge. While the pass into second would earn Stephenson a second· place finish in the series, he still wanted the moto win, but Laughridge held on for the win. Stephenson settled for second, and Nelson finished third. Molo Valley Raceway Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada Results: July 6, 2003 (Round 4 of 8) 125 WEST PRO: 1. EV8n laughridge (SUl); 2. Glen Helen Raceway Park Cheever, Waterhouse Wallop REM MX By ROCKY HASH SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JUNE 21 A new track layout greeted a large turnout of racers at this week's installment of Racing Enterprises Motorsports' weekly Saturday motocross. The wide, long course featured a new first·turn section, which added to the rac· ing excitement by haVing riders cut across a b~sically unprepped infield section before re· joining the track on the opposite side to start each moto. As of late, Yamaha YZ250 rider Craig Cheever has been putting together a string of top finishes in the 250cc Beginner class, and this week was no exception. Cheever led from start to finish in each moto for a perfect 1-1 score and the overall class victory on the day. Honda rider Noah Jordan did his best to keep Cheever in sight, and when the. dust settled, he was second in both motos for second overall
