Several of the classes saw extremely tight
scores throughout the events, with some final
results having to be settled using tie breakers.
This made for some real nail-biting times for
not only the riders but also the minders and
parents on hand, working with these young~
sters.
On Friday afternoon, there was a "gate"
trial for the adults, to keep things interesting
for them. In a gate trial, one attempts to ride
through as many gates as possible without
putting a foot down or crashing, in order to
accumulate points for each gate. This event
was held as a type of "Pro-Am" team competition, with the champ riders choosing teams
sandlot style and then riding and coaching
their teams to try for the highest score. This
turned out to be a very popular event.
Saturday afternoon featured an adventure
trail ride on trials bikes to visit some of the
beautiful waterfalls on the TIC property and
some nearby caves (and the caves were
cool!). While the grownups went exploring,
about 30 kids participated in a bicycle trials
event, set up by local Expert Mike Friddell.
Also, each day, there was swimming down
at the swimming hole and food served from
grills throughout the area. There was a spectacular Fourth of July fireworks show sponsored by Rooster Killian, The California Crew
had the big-screen TV set up, playing the U.S.
indoor round and several outdoor World
rounds.
Team Sherco USA and Ryan Young products were there in full force, giving demo
rides, setting up bikes. and offering advice and
assistance where needed. They had their full
product lines available, in conjunction with
TIC. Team Beta was also on hand. although
it's possible Ron Commo II got a "five"
punched on his card for his first attempt at
parking the motorhome. TIC and Les Mizell
were representing Gas Gas, and Chris Florin of
Montesa was there as well. It's always great to
see the manufacturers support the Youth pro·
grams. Several people commented that for
those remotely interested in a trials machine
for a youngster, this is the place to be: Any
bike that's currently available is there and
ready to be test-ridden and evaluated for one's
needs, and the experts are there to answer
any questions that come up.
All in all, it was a fantastic way to spend a
Fourth of July weekend! The annual Youth
National Championships and U.S. Women's
Open has become a real "happening" for trials
in America.
