Southern Enduro Riders Association Hare SCrambles Series Round 4: Louisiana Trail Riders Association Hare SCrambles Bad Boy Boreing is Out of Sight! By CHARAY DuBOSE AND CAROLYN REED WIGGINS, MS, JUNE 29 Clay Boreing seemed to be having a blast as he rode his new KTM to the overall victory at the LTRA hare scrambles in Wiggins, Mississippi. This was Boreing's first overall of the 2003 SERA Hare Scrambies Series. The race was heid about 20 miles north of the gulf in a beautiful pecan orchard. The trail was fast and open, with just a few tight sections_ Boreing finished his three l2.5-mile laps in an amazing one hour, 24 minutes and 13 seconds; the second-place finisher, Suzuki jockey Glen Myatt. came in almost two minutes later. The race started under cloudy skies, but the rain held off until about a minute after the first riders ieft. Thankfuliy, the shower only lasted about 10 minutes - just long enough to make the trails a little slippery and visibility a concern. Several riders said the first lap was a little tricky but that after that, the trails were perfect. Shooting off for the holeshot in the AA class was KTM-mounted Chris McMillan, with Kawasaki jockey Nathan Knight and Myatt close behind. Knight soon took over the lead in the first straight, but he didn't keep it for long, as Myatt moved his way around McMillan and Knight in the grasstrack and led the pack into the woods. He led for about a mile and a half, until the first observation check, where he flew through without getting scanned - causing him to have to go back. During this time, Boreing had caught up with Knight; as Knight approached the check, he fell, and Boreing jumped in to be scanned just as Myatt got back. Boreing checked out and was out of sight. dominating the remainder of the race. "He [BoreingJ was just gonel" exclaimed Hattiesburg Cycles rider Myatt. "Hats off to Clay for a great race. "I had a good ride," the KTM/Village Cycles Center/Moose/Scott ·Goggles/IMSbacked Boreing said, "The trails were perfect and a lot of fun. This was the first chance I've had to break in my new bike. It ran great." Finishing fifth overall was KTM rider Steve Nicholas, with his fellow Open A rider Frank Davis right behind him on a Suzuki. Nicholas, just returning to the sport, had an awesome ride as he and Davis battled it out. Davis stayed within two seconds of Nicholas for the first two laps; then the KTM pilot pulled away on the last lap, finishing almost 10 seconds in front of Davis. Of Finishing behind KTM-mounted Open A rider Cliff Ousley was Open B rider Shannon Welch, also on a KTM, coming in a very impressive 10th overall. In only his third year of racing, 19-year-old Welch not only capped off the top 10, he finished eight minutes ahead of the second-place finisher in the Open B class. "I really haven't been riding the hare scrambles series seriously," Welch admitted, "but I do intend to for the remainder of the season!" KTM rider Dustin Stevens once again dominated the Junior class, finishing more than 10 minutes ahead of the second-placed Junior rider, Kawasaki jockey Grant Owen. Stevens also finished 23rd overall for the day, beating many experienced riders. Stevens wasn't the only Novice burning up the trails. Kawasaki-mounted Open Crider Aaron Womble finished 24th overall. less than a minute behind young Stevens. The LTRA club put on a great race, and the members thanked all the riders who came out for shOWing such great sportsmanship. Louisiana Trail Riders Assoc. HS Wiggins. SANDERSON CLIFFORD, PA, JUNE 29 A little fewer than 250 riders came out to the Hurricane Hills Sports Center for an AMA District 6 points race on the expertly prepared and technical racecourse. Mother Nature provided a beautiful summer day. Considerably warm and dry weather hit the Northeast after the wettest spring on record, and Tom Hurd of Hurd Motorsports, the promoter of Hurricane Hills, and his dedicated track crew did an outstanding job of prepping the track, which remained perfect the entire day. Kawasaki pilot Marcus Hodge of Hopat~ cong, New Jersey, topped the 85cc (10-11) podium with a couple of perfect 1 - 1 rides. Hodge gated second off the start of the first moto and had the point position by the second lap and never looked back. Hodge crossed the finish line with a six-second advantage. Hodge got an even better start in the second moto, leading the pack through the first turn and quickly pulling away. Hodge was extremely smooth and consistent, and he took the checkered flag with a whopping 1 I -second lead. William Bleich took runner-up honors with a 3-2 score, and Jesse Kuzbyt rounded out the podium with a 2-3 tally. Kuzbyt got his Suzuki off the gate ahead of the pack and led the start of the first 85cc (10- I 1) moto, with Hodge, Austin Kozimor, Bleich and Jon Reber trailing. Hodge made the pass on Kuzbyt for the lead just after crossing the finish line to start lap two. Kuzbyt was relegated to second. Bleich passed Kozimor to move into third, relegating Kozimor to fourth. Reber was a solid fifth. Hodge had an eight-second lead by lap three. The top five spread out and remained unchanged to the checkered flag. Hodge crossed the finish line with a six-second lead. Rounding out the top Hurricane Hills Sports Center: Marcus Hodge (66) leads Jesse Kuzbyt (18), Jon Reber (722), William Bleich (115) and the rest ofthe pack out of the first turn in the final 85cc (10-11) mota in Clifford, Pennsylvania. five were Kuzbyt, Bleich, Kozimor and Reber, Hodge got his KX out front early in the final moto and never looked back. In tow were Kuzbyt, Reber, Kozimor and Bleich. When the leaders came out of the downhill rhythm section, the top two were unchanged, and Kozi· mor and Bleich had moved to third and fourth, respectively, relegating Reber back to fifth. Hodge was nying out front and had a sevensecond advantage after only 2 1/2 laps. Kuzbyt was a solid second, and Bleich and Reber inherited third and fourth after Kozimor went down. Jimmy Doolittle moved up to fifth, and Kozimor remounted sixth. Hodge continued to pull away and increased his lead to nine seconds by lap three. On the following lap, Hodge's lead was clocked at a whopping 11 seconds, while Bleich closed the gap on Kuzbyt to a couple of bikelengths. Bleich narrowed the gap to one bikelength by the end of lap four and made the pass for second along the back tree-line section of the racecourse on the white-flag lap. Kuzbyt was relegated to third. Reber was alone in fourth, while Doolittle was feeling pressure from Kozimor in sixth. Kozimor passed Doolittle to retake fifth place with about half a lap left in the moto. Hodge's margin of victory was 11 seconds. Trailing him were Bleich, Kuzbyt, Reber and Kozimor. Ryan Francis, aboard a KTM, led the start . of the first 65cc (7-9) moto and never looked back. In tow were Zach Pisanchyn, Sean Ballard, Kevin Hicks Jr. and Justin Vanvary. Francis had a six-second lead by the end of the second lap. Pisanchyn and Ballard were all alone in second and third. Vanvary caught and passed Hicks to take fourth. Hicks dropped to fifth. Francis increased his lead to nine seconds on lap three. Francis slowed the pace a bit on the last lap but still crossed the finish line with a six-second advantage. Rounding out the top five were Pisanchyn. Ballard, Vanvary and Hicks. Pisanchyn got his Kawasaki out front early in the final 65cc (7-9) moto, with Francis, Ballard, Hicks and Yanvary in tow. The top five remained unchanged until lap three, when Yanvary passed Hicks to lay claim to fourth place. Hicks dropped to fifth. With only one corner left on lap four, Francis caught Pisanchyn and made the pass for the point. Pisanchyn was relegated to second. Francis proceeded to pull away to a small but comfortable advantage by the end of the moto. Rounding out the top five were Pisanchyn, Ballard, Yanvary and Hicks - an exact repeat of the finishing order in the first moto. Francis' 1-1 rides earned him the top of the 65cc (7-9) podium. Ballard's consistent 2-2 rides earned him runner-up laurels, and Ballard rounded out the podium with a 3-3 tally. Hurricane Hills Sports Center CliHord. Pennsylvania Results: June 29, 2003 P/W; l.
